Highly readable! I picked it up coz I love Jane Austen..and reading it just adds that little bit more to Jane Austen...how I wish Austen had written more books!
The tips are pertinent and examples well-used. There are also modern day references, which are easy to relate to! Some heartwarming tips for all those lonely/broken hearts our there too.

Received this book from Ankysim during Dec meetup last year. Very delightful read. Valuable insights. Will make it a ray so Anky's book could be widely shared amongst avid Austen readers.

Well, I keep postponing going to the library in hopes of receiving a bookring book, and then when I finally give in and come home with 5 books, I find a book in the mail! Talk about Murhpy's law! :))

This book is now in good company on my TBR pile, and I'll start reading it as soon as I finish the one I'm reading now. Thank you very much for sharing this, Dei!

Journal Entry 4 by vexter from Ljubljana, Osrednja Slovenija - Okolica Ljubljane in Ljubljana Slovenia on Sunday, July 16, 2006
Heh, this was unexpected fun. :) I'm a big fan of Jane Austen, so it was great to read again about my favourite characters, and analyze their behaviour.

I don't think I've ever read any dating guides, so I can't vouch for advice this one offers. It does seem all common sense to me, but I'm not married to a rich guy I'm madly in love with who loves me more than anyone and anything in the whole wide world, so don't take my word for it. ;)

I do have a few problems with the author. In the beginning, she makes fun of modern dating guides that tell you to time your phone calls and what not, and then proceeds to give advice such as "reply to his first text message but ignore the second". There are other things which I can only think of as scheming, although she warns against this kind of behaviour throughout the book.

Still, it's your choice how seriously you want to take this book. There are amusing stories and character sketches, and you can read them and be amused. Or you can compare her advice with your own behaviour and be deeply worried about how inappropriately (or so she thinks) you act. The choice is yours. :)

I already have letra's address, so I'm posting the book tomorrow.

Thank you Vexter and Dei! This is #2 on my TBR pile. I'll read and send along ASAP.

I was drawn to this book by the beautiful illustration on the cover (by Roxanna Bikadoroff) and, of course, by the mention of Jane Austen, one of my favorite authors. I had never read a "dating guide" before and my opinion about it is the same as Vexter's: the author seems to contradict herself in the sections where she claims to bring Jane Austen's expertise directly into the modern world, but readers who are fond both of Jane Austen's work and this type of guide will surely enjoy the book.

I'll send the book to Aneca as soon as she writes back with her address. Thank you for sharing :)

Journal Entry 7 by aneca on Thursday, August 17, 2006
It just arrived! Thank you so much, I promise to read it soon...

Journal Entry 8 by aneca on Sunday, August 27, 2006
I just finished it. As the bookcrossers before me I had never read a Dating Guide and my main interest was the Jane Austen connection.
Well I thought she made funny and interesting points about the character's behaviour but I ended up skimming a bit through the dating advice paragraphs. That part wasn't as interesting to me and the book became a bit too long. Just mho of course!
Overall I enjoyed it and I would recommend it to Jane Austen fans :-)

I'm sending it to the next bookcrosser as soon as I have an address...

Image hosting by Photobucket Book received today, thanks for passing it on vainilla79!

This book is one of the seven (yes, seven!) books I received yesterday but it's #3 on Mt TBR so I should be able to read it within a month:)

Thanks a lot for sharing Dei!

Journal Entry 13 by chich from Ibiza - Sant Antoni de Portmany, Illes Balears/Islas Baleares Spain on Saturday, October 14, 2006
I thought it would take me longer to start reading this book but "fortunately" I've been in bed with the flu for the past 4 days which means I was able to catch up with my reading (Mt TBR is ecstatic!). I was quite a bit aprehensive when I started reading the book because when I signed up for this ray I didn't realize it was actually a dating guide... I know, I know, the book is named "Jane Austen's Guide to Dating", hello?! Anyway, I can't resist anything that has "Jane Austen" on it so I signed up without giving it much thought;)

Overall, this book was an ok read and as others have said before I enjoyed the insight on Austen's characters, and the opportunity to look at them from a different angle. I'd never read a dating guide before and don't actually enjoy self-help-type books but I guess the advice given by the author here is pretty sensible and the information and chapters are very well-organized. I did skim through some of the dating advice passages, especially towards the end...

Thanks a lot for sharing Dei:) I already have Stuff-Nonsense's address and will send her the book first thing Monday morning.

I, too, wasn't actually expecting a book of dating advice (go figure, from the title!). I haven't dated in a gazillion years, but appreciated the work put in by the author to highlight Jane Austen's advice, as expounded in her novels, and relate it to present-day situations. The only quibble I have is when modern-day mores muddied the waters (eg. Jane's advice is to avoid ne'er-do-wells like Willoughby and Henry Crawford, but the author adds that these guys would be OK for a one-night stand - I don't think Jane would agree, and I think it weakens the clarity of the argument).

I have contacted bakerwhencan for her address, and will send it as soon as I receive it. Thanks for sharing the book and coordinating the bookring, Dei.

No reply from bakerwhencan, so I've PM-ed momofap as well.

Book sent on to momofap on Dec 13th. Happy reading!

Will PM Kera and get this on the way to the next person in the ring.

I couldn't seem to get into this book at all so am going to give up :(

Am PM'ing another bookcrosser who has this book on their wishlist to see if they would be interested in reading this ray.

Journal Entry 26 by Kera from Brixham, Devon United Kingdom on Monday, June 18, 2007
found another interested bookcrosser so will be sending this book to them tonight :)

Journal Entry 27 by cheli-garza from Dallas, Texas USA on Saturday, June 23, 2007
This came in the mail yesterday... all the way from England! Thanks, Kera. :)

How long was this book on my wishlist? It's an actual guide to dating, referencing Jane Austen's novels. Although I've been with my husband for 10 years, this is still such a good book that I'm going to have to read it before passing it on. As for passing it on... I have a newly-single-again friend who might find it fun and useful.
