This is a truly wonderful coming-of-age story, about a Brooklyn kid in the early '40s who latches onto a young, rising New York Giants baseball star as his hero.
The story unfolds unconventionally through the boy's eclectic scrapbook of letters, report cards, postcards, boxscores, matchbook covers, telegrams, fictional newspaper clippings, war dispatches and so much more.
It's an extraordinary book ... truly honest-to-gawd laugh outloud funny ... poignant ... unputdownable.
You don't have to like or even understand baseball to get drawn bigtime into this book, because more than anything else it's about reaching out ... about making a difference in the lives around you.
I've run into two really remarkable characters over the last year ... Atticus Finch in 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and Fermin Romero de Torres in 'The Shadow of the Wind' ... and the kid in this book, 12-year-old Joey Margolis, is just as memorable and just as remarkable as either one of them.
And, actually, this kid is something of a modern-day, grittier, street-savvy Tom Sawyer. You won't forget this kid or this book for a long time.
I LOVED this book. Made me laugh, made me cry, made me think. You'd have to be a total cynic with a cold heart not to love this book. Seriously.

Today is the last day at our current address and I was so happy to see this book in my mailbox, instead of waiting for it to be forwarded. I also received another bookcrossing book today, which I will have to read first since it is part of a spiral. I will read this book as soon as I finish the book for the spiral.
I loved the book!! Joey is one smart cookie and a manipulator, but you've gotta love him. I have to say I somewhat suspected what happened at the end of the story, but I was in complete denial until Hazel received the telegram - and then I bawled. Thank you, bobbarama, for sharing this book with us. I think I am going to buy this book for my brother for Christmas as I am sure that he will love it as well.
I mailed the book to Thursday5 on Saturday 10/28
What a nice surprise to find this book in my mailbox today. I will start reading it right away.
I haven't enjoyed a book this much for a long time. Thanks for sharing this book bobbarma-I would never have discovered it if it hadn't been for your bookring.
Everyone in our family gets a book on Christmas Eve and I always try to find the "perfect" book for each person. I think this is the book I'll get for my son-in-law.
I will get it sent on as soon as I get the address of the next person in the book ring.

Wow! What can I say about this wonderful book that hasn't already been said? It's a heartwarming coming-of-age story about a fatherless Jewish boy growing up in Brooklyn in the WWII era, and the baseball hero who becomes his unlikely mentor. This was a love story, not about romantic love, but about the amazing fatherly bond between a child and the man who made the difference in his life. The story is presented in an unusual and interesting style, not as a narrative, but rather as an exchange of letters, newspaper articles, school report cards and psychiatrist evalutions. This gave it a very personal and engaging edge. Brilliant!

Last Days of Summer has arrived today -- I'm about half way through The Handmaid's Tale so will get to this within a few days. I'll need something upbeat!
I had a lot of trouble getting into this one for a while. just don't know why I couldn't make myself read very long at a time, etc....maybe the unusual format, maybe the outlandish behavior of Joey, but then finally began to relax and started to really enjoy it. And enjoy it I did. Thanks bobbarama for the opportunity to read this one and I apologize for taking so very long. Bookrings are wonderful in that you read many things you wouldn't normally look at if left to your own in the bookstore. I'll be happy to send to book-man-8, am waiting for his address.
I mailed the book April 5 - first class. The Post Office says 7 days.....we'll see.

The book got here today! Thanks "Olered"! By the way, your post office was wrong (!) it took only 6 days, not 7! ;-)
Well, this was quite an uncommon book - the way it is written; in fact the whole concept of this novel. I did not have problems with it, but it did not catch my attention as much as I would have liked. Therefore no rating for this book. But it was a nice and interesting experience! Thanks for sharing!

Oh, how I loved this book. A fantastic read, made me LOL one minute and cry the next. I'm going to add to my available list until I decide who to pass it on to. I think the story needs to be shared with many more.
