Picked up today at the meet at the George and Dragon. I am sure this will be as good as Fingersmith, which was far better than the bbc adaptation.

8 out of 10

Sarah Waters is an excellent writer. There are always unexpected twists in her stories. I enjoyed this one as much as Fingersmith and shall look out for Affinity.
I have seen that this is on the wishlist of my NSSV so it will be off to her shortly with other goodies.

What a wonderful book a coming of age story of sexual exploration and discovery. It is in 3 parts each very different but none the less compelling. Sarah Waters attention to detail is wonderful and her depiction of Victorian London transported me right there.

I enjoyed this book so much that I've decided to send it out on a ring. Watch this space :o)

I'm a little later dealing with this but I am so glad I read it.

A lesbian romance and a tour through the underside of Victorian London, from the music halls to the infant Labour movement viua the shadowy world of street prostitutes of all sexes that thrived beneath the prim facade.

Gripping aand stratlingly well-written.

On it's way to scotsbookie at the earliest opportunity.

I thoroughly enjoyed this very well written trawl through the shadowy world of the Victorian sexual underbelly. Victorian London was brought to life through Waters narrative & I lived & breathed with Nan as she came of age.

Thank you Maire-Therese for the chance to read this book.

ETA posted to Lady-Mondegreen today 23rd May 2006.

Just finished this book. A fascinating and enjoyable read, thanks for sharing! Will now be putting Affinity on my wishlist too.

Thanks for sharing, will PM the next ring member for their details now.

Started that one on August 27 and it looks quite interesting !

9 out of 10

I thought it would take more time as Fingersmith did this spring, but I finished it ! It was so gripping, I could scarsely put it down at night to sleep and people on the subway were giving me looks because of the "trashy" cover. I really love how Sarah Waters managed to write 3 equally good parts about different part of that period. I had never heard of those musichalls before, but the way she described it, there's nothing left in modern theater from then ! As for the other parts, I'm always happy to read how Sarah Waters give so much power to women since I always think of the "weaker sex" when I think of women in the victorian era. This was truly a great book and the only weakness could be the ending that while it ties all the loose ends looks too much like a planned finale !

thanks for sharing Marie-Therese, it was sent this afternoon to geishabird in Toronto.

I enjoyed this very much. Sarah Waters does a wonderful job of bringing the details of the 19th century to life - the clothes, the hairstyles, the smells, the foods - and that is what I always find most interesting about history: the little pieces of people's everyday lives. I'd not read much about the lesbian subculture that existed in the Victorian era but it's not hard to imagine that it would have been much like this. Never a dull moment in this book, which is a fascinating look at one of those aspects of history that have (surprise!) been swept under the carpet (or into the closet, as it were).

Just waiting to hear back from tania-in-nc.

UPDATE: tania has asked to be skipped; I will contact colebear.

UPDATE 9.30.06: book was mailed today.

What a great book. Thanks for sharing it, marie-therese. I really enjoyed following Nancy's journey and watching her grow as an individual. A great author writes characters that are deep. These characters were so full of human flaws and greatness that you felt as if you really know them.

As soon as I have an address, I'll ship the book off across the pond.

ETA 11/21/06:
allycat898 has asked to be skipped as is currently bogged down with university work. I'll PM the next person right away.

ETA 11/22/06:
I have TracyR's address and will mail the book today.

This book has not been rated.

This actually arrived with me yesterday morning but have not had a chance to journal it until now - sorry colebear, you must have been worried that it had got lost. I guess with Christmas post etc, it has taken a little longer to cross the water.
I am reading another bookring book at the moment and this will be next on my list.

Journal Entry 29 by TracyR on Wednesday, April 18, 2007

This book has not been rated.

Firstly i need to apologise for having this book for so long - have barely had a minute to sit down and read for one reason or another since Christmas.
I have finally managed to finish this interesting book although Nancy did actually annoy me. I found her to be full of herself for much of the tale. Despite that, the descriptions of Victorian London were fascinating.
This book will be sent back on its journey tomorrow.
Sorry once again for holding this ring up.

6 out of 10

I had formed a dreadful impression of this book based on catching glimpses of the tv adaptation of this and watching in horrified fascination until I shook myself free and turned it off... and then doing the same thing for at least one other episode. It seemed self-indulgent and predictable, like a teenager's fantasy, and struck me as having been filmed as much (or more) to titillate men as any other reason.

So I was a little hesitant to sign up for this ring, but on the other hand, I kept seeing references to the book by people who had obviously enjoyed it and seemed intelligent :) I guess I was expecting thinly-plotted lesbian erotica with costumes. I am pleased to report that I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm sorry to say the book is going to be stalled here in Finland for a few weeks while I go away on holiday. I had planned to mail it to Sirah before I left, but she's written back to say that she has already read the book and wants to be skipped. So I PM'd riverwillow, who is next on the list, but haven't heard back yet - her profile page says she is "sometimes slow to respond to PMs". So I'm afraid I can't do anything more with this book until early June. I'll get it moving then, though.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

After they began to allow the mapping of Controlled Releases on bookcrossing, I started slowly working through my old CRs, filling in details. This book was mailed to riverwillow but never (yet) journalled. I see that riverwillow updated with the following on 21st June 2008 (on the profile page): For various reasons, too complicated to go into, my tbr books are all packed up at the moment and some of the stalled rings and rays are jumbled up in the boxes, for which I apologise. I do know what books I have and what is and isn't mine and I will get things moving as soon as I can. I am beginning to sort my books out, but it may take some time as I need to clear some space to accomodate my enormous tbr pile by releasing some of my availables.

Good luck clearing out, riverwillow, and hope to hear from this book again soon. :)
