I don't have time to read this one yet since I'm going to be busy with school this year, so I've decided to turn it into a bookring! The List 1. LisaGriffith - USA - (international) 2. bearyfriend - Singapore - (international 3. tootshelling - Germany - (international) 4. jellyfish67 - UK -<----Book is Here 5. davemurray101 - Australia - (international) 6. RustyReader2 - Canada - (US only) 7. boerbabe - USA - (US only) 8. Withoutwings - USA - (US preferred) 9. back to literarylover - USA Just a few bookring guidelines: -- Journal the book as soon as you receive it, and contact the next person for their mailing address. -- Take as much time as you need, but try to read within 4-6 weeks so the ring keeps moving along. -- Take a moment to journal your thoughts on the book when finished. It's interesting to read other's feelings on the book too!

Journal Entry 8 by bearyfriend from Singapore, Singapore Singapore on Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Basically is about trials and tribulations of life and how a person learns to make sense of it. The happenings are all quite melodramatic, one disaster followed by another, yet despite all the hardships the great philosopher Pangross would still say everything happens for the best. This is his mantra despite being hanged, dissected and stung with blows, and how his student Candide was beathen, enslaved, almost burnt and nearly killed, and he still believe that every bad thing that happens to him happens for a purpose. Some events mentioned are based on real historical happenings, eg. the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. All these are on last few pages where the notes to the text are. Will send it off once I have the next address.

Journal Entry 10 by tootshelling from Wynnewood, Pennsylvania USA on Wednesday, October 08, 2008
Hello my little friend! This was in my post box when I returned from my month-long trip to the US. I signed up for this bookring because it is a title on the 1001 list but also because I saw the Opera in London this June. My cousin-in-law (my husband's cousin) was a dancer in the opera put on by the English National Opera (ENO). The version I saw was an updated rendition of Leonard Bernstin's and it was VERY political. I'm interested in seeing the similarities as well as the differences between ENO's and Voltaire's original. I'd also be interested in viewing Bernstein's original, if anyone knows of this on video, please let me know. I need to finish A Passage to India before I start this one. I'm almost done but it has been SLOW going (which wasn't expected after breezing through Howard's End earlier this summer)! 6 NOV UPDATE: Almost done! This one is off to Jellyfish67 along with A Passage to India as soon as I get the address! 11 NOV UPDATE: On its way in today's mail!!

Journal Entry 15 by davemurray101 from Maryville, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, June 20, 2009
Just finished this one today. One of the first great philosophical novels of western literature. Full of interesting philosohies and interesting characters. One of the most global novels of the time from france, to turkey to Argentina etc. Well worth its place in the 1001 books and the pathenon of western literature. PMing RustyReader2 for address 28/06 - Rustyreader2 appears to be inactive for nearly a year. PMing next on the list. 16/08 - no response from any of the other readers. looks like it is in my possession for the time being.

Journal Entry 18 by LiniP at Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Sunday, February 27, 2011

I finished this book over the last couple of days. A nice little story. Sometimes it does not take that much to be happy. Will tend to my garden next weekend. Read as part of the 1.000 book-German-challenge. Will add it to my private collection since my husband would also like to read at some stage. Rarität der 1.000 Bücher.
