This follow up to Death and the Penguin is more a critique on Russian life, corruption and the war with Chechnia and less of a quirky comedy, as the first book was.

I enjoyed it, the deadpan way in which Kurkov describes the strange adventures of Victor is still a treat.

I loved the style that this book (and the first one) are written in. I disagree slightly with cloggy, although possibly more corruption than the first one (and there was quite a lot in that) and the stuff about Chechnia is there its kind of in the back ground and the quirky comedy aspect is very much apparent. Plus I was very happy to find out Victor made amends with Misha as that bothered me about the end of Death and the Penguin.

A great book that nicely finishes the story of Victor and Misha. One of those book that just make you smile when you finish reading it. I have posted this book on to juicy-comrade today. Gotta love the US Postal Service, Airmail was cheaper than surface! Thanks for Shimmy-crazy for running the bookray of both of these intriguing books. US Customs label# LC512223967US

I found this one a little harder to get into than the last one, but that's always a risk with sequels that aren't read strictly back to back. It was still a very good book though, and I loved how unexpected all the events were - eg. armwrestling. It was great.

I'll get this into the mail for Xanthe-pup either Thursday or Friday.

I've been looking forward to this one - loved Death and the Penguin. Arrived yesterday, and it will be read through the Easter break.

Journal Entry 13 by Xanthe-pup from Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 18, 2006
Good follow-up to Death & the Penguin - although even more far-fetched (if that were possible!). Viktor leads a charmed life - being able to walk into the most dangerous situations, to get involved with very dangerous people, and always walk away pretty much unscathed.

Well written, quirky, interesting window onto one man's life in the Ukraine.

Will be sent on as soon as I get Drusillamac's address.

I have held on to this book for an unforgivaeable length of time - apologies to all involved. I have now posted it on to Drusillamac (finally!).

Thanks for your patience.

Caught this book in the post this morning. Thanks to Xanthe-pup for the cute little penguin badge :-) and thanks to Cloggy for starting this ray. I have a few other rings/rays in front of this one at the moment.

Journal Entry 16 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Sunday, September 3, 2006
First of all, apologies for holding onto this book for so long. It's a poor excuse but, after my exams finished, I was swamped by a small mountain of bookrings and rays. As I was on the end of this ray, I put this book to the bottom of the pile for that moment. A few weeks ago, I picked up the book again as I felt I should really get around to reading it.

Sadly, I'm not enjoying this book as much as Death and the Penguin. It's been a struggle to make my 50 page rule. With that in mind, I am going to pass on this one and perhaps RABCK this book or continue on the ray. I am off on holiday next week so, if anyone has any objections to my plans for the book, please PM me.
