8 out of 10

This is a radio play version of the famous novel by CS Lewis. More than just a narrator reading the book, this is actors and sound effects and music. It was a very nice way to experience the story.

I hadn't really known the story before. CS Lewis wrote this book first, although it turned out to be the second of the series of seven. The "prequel" to this, or book 1, is The Magicians Nephew.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the story of four children who visit their uncle one summer to escape the war raids in London. While exploring his mansion of a house, the youngest sister, Susan, finds the world of Narnia inside the wardrobe closet. There she meets and befriends a faun and spends hours engaged in conversation with him, but when she come back, it turns out mere seconds have past. Her siblings are reluctant to believe her, until their uncle convinces them that such a tale is actually possible. That's when they until they, too, find themselves in the magical wood. Upon entering Narnia, the youngest brother, Edmund, is deceived by the White Witch who makes the whole world always winter, but never Christmas. Along with a family of sentient badgers (or something), the siblings mount a rescue effort to save Edmund from the Witch. Along the way, they meet Aslan, the Lion God. A prophecy is fulfilled, a great battle ensues, Winter ends, and the youngsters grow-up in a magical world to meet an incredible destiny.

I must say, I did find the Christian analogy readily apparent thorughout the book, but overall it was an enjoyable enough experience.

I have also listened to book 3, The Horse and his Boy on audio from radio theatre network, and am in the process of reading the aforementioned The Magician's Nephew in print. Quite a genius with a pen, that CS Lewis was, and I can see why this series is dubbed a classic and is still in print.
