Rec'd as a trade from Iodine
Before I decide whether I like an author or not, I prefer to read at least three books by them. This is number three and I've officially decided I don't care for Anita Shreve.
She's too wordy and somewhat pretentious (for my tastes). I started this one and stopped less than 100 pages in. Sometimes I think the worst thing a fiction writer can do is write about characters that the reader doesn't care about. I felt not a bit of interest in either of the main characters. This book reminded me a bit of The Weight of Water, another of the three Shreve books I read, which was really hard to get through.
I also read Sea Glass which I probably liked the best of three but it was still too long and overwritten.
No more Anita Shreve for me.

Reserved for a Trade Paperback bookbox
I chose this one from awakeagain's trade paperback bookbox. I am looking forward to trying this author- hopefully I'll like her more than awakeagain did :)
I must admit I read this several months ago and must have forgotten to make a journal entry. I am not sure if I want to read another shreve novel or not. Some of the descriptions and wordplay were beautiful and I was very interested to find out what happened to the characters. Some sections got too melodramatic, which would have been forgivable... but then I felt completely cheated by the major revelation at the end of the book. I felt I had wasted all the time caring for the main characters. If the ending had been different, I would have rated the book a 7, not a 4. I am not giving anything away, but some of the amazon reviews do, so don't read those unless you want to know the ending. Thanks for sharing this book!
