Synopsis
The action in this novel is restricted to the events of one day in central London, punctuated by the chimes of Big Ben. It is a richly-textured impression of the cross-currents of sophisticated social life.

I did not like that book. I read it because of the movie "The hours" and was very disappointed. I found the story very boring.

Wow! That was hard work. It goes on and on, no logical breaks, pages and pages of lyrical prose that seems to go nowhere. It certainly was full of vivid memories, but I can't see that Clarissa was particularly "aware of the force of life going on around her", she seemed quite insular to me. I must say I'm glad she didn't marry Peter Walsh, he seemed a very mean-spirited character to me. I did like the way "Virginia Woolf reveals the differences in the way people think and see and treat one another", and actually found it amusing because it is so very true that we make assumptions about other people's thoughts and intentions.

Thanks for that Annadlx. I'll have a better understanding when I read The Hours now. I have PMd charliewendy & will send this off once I have an address. Posted 15/12/5.

Thanks Annadlx I really enjoyed this one. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to fly into peoples heads and read their minds this is for you. The premise is that the facade that we present to the outside world is no indication of whats going on inside our heads. Thats a theory I've long held.
It is not the easiest book to read but if you are familiar with London or interested in that period in history (post WW1)it will help.
I have PMed nakupenda for address.

Reading this is about as hard as reading parts of James Joyce's Ulysses (the style :stream of consciousness). And it gets even harder when reading it along some lighter stuff like a John Irving novel (as I did) :)

btw: there is a nice "user manual" : http://www.gradesaver.com/classicnotes/titles/dalloway/

As said by previous readers, this one was pretty hard to read! Like JohnSteed, I've been reading some "lighter stuff" for the past month and it made this one even harder to read by comparison! Anyway, I love Woolf's writing style and the way it flows effortlessly from page to page.

Thanks a lot for sharing Annadlx!

I've PMed deemaude for their address so the book should be on its way soon:)

Updated May 9: I received deemaude's address yesterday and sent her the book today. Enjoy:)

i like Virginia Woolf very much, but in original it's not easy for me to enjoy the book. i need too much time to get into the plot and to remember some words... hard work

but great book.

Sorry for the delay! The book is not forgotten! If it's OK, I'd still like to read it!

I've read the book and I quite liked it. I remember that at first I found it hard getting into it, then I more and more found myself strangely understood by invented people from the 1920s. Well, some things obviously really never change... Great book, really!
