Banewreaker is very different from Kushiel's Legacy. I am speculating that this story was actually written by Carey before she wrote the Legacy, she
returned to it after being published and revamped it. It is not quite the
calibre of writing of Legacy, but it is still top notch. The story is
unique. I see all sorts of parallels to the Lord of the Rings, which I
think one will see no matter what they read if it contains Men, and
variations of Orcs and Elves, which have completely different names and
somewhat different descriptions, but still the parallels are there. Since
things like that don't bother me, it isn't a complaint, but I know a lot of
readers who are very bothered by any parallels between different novels and
authors.

The book arrived today! I'll start reading it right away.

It took me awhile but I made my way through this book and finished it over the Thanksgiving weekend. Overall I enjoyed the story but feel a little left hanging- this book seems to be just the set-up for the real meat of the story which I assume will come in the next two volumes of this trilogy. I'm looking forward to the release of the rest of the books in this story since I feel like I only just started to get to know the characters.

One reaction that surprised me- I actually *liked* the "good" guys also. Before reading, I had thought that the story would bias the reader towards the main characters who are "evil" but I think the author did an excellent job in showing how good&bad are sometimes just a matter of perspective.

I'll be sending this book along sometime later this week!

Just a few notes about this book: It is part of a duology, not a trilogy. The second book, Godslayer is out in hardcover, and is due out in February in paperback. I do plan to send it on the ray if anyone is interested.

It's been a long month. It took me a couple of weeks (including some long road trips around the holidays) to finish this book. I have trouble getting into fantasy books like this that use names that don't flow off my mental tongue.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next, but not as much as I expected before I started it. As adrienne mentioned, this is very different from the Kushiel series. The similarities (7 gods, with different regions of the 'world') were interesting to me as well as the differences. Kushiel was about politics (and strange bedfellows) while this series is much more about war and the battles between good and evil.

I sent it off to London last Saturday, and thought I'd better journal and let everyone know what is happening. Thanks again for setting this up adrienne.

Received the book - thank you! I'm not used to receiving things by airmail, it was very quick, but looks terribly expensive.
I don't think Auglaise is going to like me very much soon. I'v just sent her a PM to tell her I have the next three Marion Zimmer Bradley Darkover books to send her on the spiral we're both participating in. I wonder if I can get to and read Banewreaker quickly enough to slip it into the same envelope? Anyway, she'll soon have plenty of reading matter!

Ooh, I love this one! Unfortunately that means I'll want to read the others in the series, which has me in a quandary, as I've promised not to sign myself up for any rings or rays in 2006. So please, if you do get them, and decide to do a ring/ray, can you not tell me about it until 2007?!

My favourite character is Ushahin, my favourite species the Fjel. I'm not sure what, if anything, that says about me.....

I received this last week, but didn't get a chance to journal it.

Basically, as I have been and am still waiting to start a new job, I opened this the second that I got it, as I currently have alot of time on my hands. I didn't put it down. I really enjoyed it, but also found it amazingly depressing. I disagree with WistfulDragon about the battle between good and evil - I think it's more complex than that. It seems to me that it's about standing up for something you believe in and how your perspective of what is right and good is changed by the corruption of those beliefs. I think that it's much more about how there are two sides to every story, and that history is written by the victors.

Towards the end, Cerelinde really began to piss me off. It wasn't so much that she blindly held to her belief in her distant, uncaring god (although that was annoying), it was that she refused to entertain the merest thought that Satoris and Tanaros might have a reason to see things differently.

On the whole though, I really enjoyed it and look forward to sitting for hours in Borders reading Godslayer!
