Journal Entry 3 by kittiwake on Saturday, March 18, 2006
This book has been in the Costa Coffee OBCZ for quite a while, so I am going to take it to next week's Birmingham meet. I will leave it at the Hudson's OBCZ if nobody there wants it.

I read these three books a couple of years ago, and enjoyed them. Here are the mini-reviews I wrote at the time:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The conversations, so arch and full of Circus jargon, are just as I remember them from the TV series. Surprisingly Beryl Reid was not exaggerating Connie's eccentric pattern of speech at all! As I read it, I kept wondering how long it would have taken me to guess the identity of the mole if I hadn't already known. I think you could guess, there were quite a lot of clues scattered about.

The Honourable Schoolboy
The Circus is in disarray after the discovery of the mole, and all its Russian networks have been blown. Smiley, Connie and a few others are methodically searching the Circus' archives and questioning former agents in order to track down any of Karla's operations that the mole had tried to suppress. Eventually they piece together one of the suppressed discoveries; the movement of large sums of money from Paris to the Far East, but in payment for what? Karla is well-known to dislike paying large sums to his agents, so what could be worth this much money? An exciting story, but it took me ages to finish and I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two books.

Smiley's People
The final book in the Karla trilogy. What has got the Estonian emigre group in London in turmoil? Why has Karla been trying to create a legend for a girl? Smiley's final campaign against the elusive Karla definitely perked me up after the struggle I had reading the previous book.

Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy is on my current list of 'wish to reads'. It was recommended to me by a work colleague and I also read a review of the TV programme when reading Crystal Bucket (a book of Clive Jame's tv review columns) so I'm excited to get into this one.

I haven''t been able to read this enormous tome of a book, as wonderful as it looks. As it''s so good and I know that I won''t be able to read it for sometime I am going to release it in my spree today at Greenwich. I hope it finds a happy home.
