Journal Entry 3 by SAMMY-SAMSEL from St. Louis, Missouri USA on Monday, October 17, 2005
WOW! I asked for a postcard in return for a RABCK, and what do I get?? Scottish Recipe books! Three of them ;D And a really, really neat bookmark with Judus Maccabeus on it from Crathes Castle where Smurphie works! And, a postcard from the castle where Smurphie works! And, a map of The National Trust for Scotland! Woo-Hoo, I hit the jackpot=) Thanks so much, Smurphie! I'm enjoying all of them. The recipes are a hoot. Here we are with "caster" sugar again. I love the name "Clootie Dumpling", and how it came by its name... [This pudding would traditionally have been made in a cloth or "clout"---hence the name Clootie Dumpling.] I'll have a little Poached Salmon with Green Mayonnaise, please! *gag* GREEN MAYONNAISE! arrgghh Doesn't that mean it has mold on/in it? (just kidding) And, as an avid bird lover, I could never bring myself to eat your "Roast Grouse"...brace of young grouse, plucked and drawn!

Thanks BadgerJim. This came about a week ago. It's so tiny that it got lost in the sea of books! Sorry about that. What a nice looking book. It will be painful parting with it. I'll pick out a few recipes and then try to find a perfect place for it.

Journal Entry 12 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Tuesday, April 03, 2007

Received this in the mail today! What a surprise and a delight! I actually saw this on KK's list of RABCK's and thought how neat it would be to read. It's a gorgeous book, with the artwork throughout. I'm honestly not much of a cooker, but some of these seem pretty simple... so I might head out tonight for some ingredients and make something traditional on Tartan Day Friday! I'll have to skip the mutton and the grouse since I'm a vegetarian, but there's a wide variety here. I've already flipped through and requested the Butterscotch Meringue Pie as my birthday treat from my family since my birthday's coming up in a few weeks. I'm very excited to try it! Thank you so much!

Journal Entry 13 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Sunday, April 22, 2007

Just wanted to make another entry today for this book. My birthday was April 19 but I celebrated it with family today. My mother and I had a fun time trying out the 'Butterscotch Meringue Pie'. The hardest part was converting to US units (0.375 cups of caster sugar?!) so the whole time we were worried we got the math wrong and it would turn out awful (yes, I was a math minor in college, but they didn't exactly cover cooking or the difference between our pints and emperical pints!). The pie (I've included a picture here) turned out all right. Not as strong a flavor as the butterscotch I'm used to, unfortunately, but ther meringue was great and it was certainly a fun adventure! I'll probably try another recipe or two and then keep it around until next year's Tartan Day challenge.

Sending across the pond (where the measurement conversions won't be an issue) as part of a prize for the 2008 Tartan Day Challenge. These are recipes any good house elf should know ;-) Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Journal Entry 15 by house-elfdobby from Derby, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Thursday, July 10, 2008
Hurrah, I'd got no idea what to make for tea tonight and this wee book arrived with the postie this merry morn! along with a host of other goodies - thank you so much KateKintail! Am delighted to have won - there's lots of recipes in here that my granny, and my mum used to make when I was wee, so will look forward to trying them out, and hopefully not poisoning any of my family as I'm quite a rubbish cook actually - or should I say, more of a lazy cook! Might try the Cranachan first - it's delicious! Even when cooked by a house-elf! The illustrations are beautiful, one in particular brought back happy memories of 6 of us camping in a two man tent at Lamlash on Arran, fuelled by cider. Och those were the days hen! Thanks again - will definitely be passing this one onto another BookCrosser, dinny you worry yer wee heid. Eeek. Am rambling now, must go ..................

Journal Entry 17 by KrazyKatLaydee from Rolla, Missouri USA on Sunday, April 18, 2010
"Hello from the book you sent to the Second Spurtle Sweepstakes winner all those years ago! I made it safely to Rolla, MO, only to languish while KrazyKatLaydee did everything but send news of my safe arrival (and clean house). I've finally skelped her in her big, fat dowp, and she's agreed to let you know how I'm doing!" Thank you so much! Please forgive me for being such a glaikit eejit! --- KrazyKatLaydee I've loved looking through the recipes. And the Cadbury magical Elf was every bit as good as the creme eggs we get over here.
