One of my instructors recommended this book to me and he was spot on with this one. I quite enjoyed it. I could really sympathize with the main character. At times his behaviour was quite bizarre but his reasoning for it always seemed sound. Interestingly, I think the protagonist may in a way be a hero in the Campbellian sense. From his point of view, he ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder, where he does encounter fabulous forces. As for the returning with gifts part, that depends on how you look at it.

I do have a question, though. On page 3, there are five faces. The first four are Conspiratorial, Mean, Conflicted and Shocked (in my opinion.) The last one is... what, Queasy? It seems to me that the context would have it be Nervous, but I don't think that image really represents that.

I am sending this book onto Biomicah. Just waiting to get the address. It will be sent out asap.

Journal Entry 8 by Biomicah from Patton, Missouri USA on Wednesday, March 8, 2006
Thanks! This arrived in horrible condition though! The envelope had already been opened! There was a tear at one end and there were packaging/shipping stickers all over the outside of the envelope. On top of that, whoever left it, put it inside the door, not the mailbox.

When I took the book out, the cover had been folded back against itself. Creased badly. The only bookcrossing mark is a sticker inside the book and writing on the page ends. For such a wildly popular book, this book has been treated very badly.
Very, very peculiar. Anyway, I will read it and send it off ASAP.

This is an amazing story that gives the reader a peek into the fascinating mind of a person living in a world that is not his own. I have never seen an author write from such an interesting perspective before and I am blessed to have read such a great book. I hate to ruin the story with spoilers, so I will say the plot and the mystery unravel at the end in a completely original way. I did suspect what happened early on in the book, but the author easily deceived me and duped me into thinking it was a completely different suspect. Great job Haddon! I love this book. I will certainly have to buy my own copy ASAP.

Wow, what a facinating book. It's so interesting that it's come into my life this week, as it was just Tuesday when I was getting to know a colleague better and learned she had an autistic grandson. The story is just marvelous in the way it transports the reader into the mind of order and dissonance that is autism. I have enormous respect for how difficult it is to manage a life under these conditions, and now I want to know more about the author. Is he indeed autistic himself?

Anyway, the story is facinating and told with great skill. Kudos to the author and great thanks to monkeyflower for passing it along.

I've already PM'd for the next address, so this one should be on its way soon.

rec'd today in the mail, looking forward to starting it this weekend! :)

Journal Entry 13 by yokaye on Sunday, April 23, 2006
I loved this book. Once I was finally able to sit down and start reading it, I didn't want to stop. The point of view really drew me in to the story. Seeing how the autistic mind works, with the quirks and mental processes, was fascinating.

I, too, was left wanting to know more about Haddon and his past or knowledge of autism...it seemed very accurate from my non-experienced pov.

This will be sent off pending the address of the next in line. :) Thanks monkeyflower, for sharing!

ETA: ShutterflyIL has already read this book, so pming rainwolfe for address.

I've started reading this and I have to say it's interesting. I like the writing style, and find it even more enjoyable if I read it with an English accent in my head.

(sorry I originally caught this as Wolfboy, not realizing he was logged in instead of me)
This was wonderful. I had read bits here & there, but not gotten time to get real far in it, so this morning after I dropped Wolfboy at school I stopped at Caribou, grabbed a mocha, and sat out in the sun to read. I hadn't brought my cell with me so I had no idea what time it was getting to be, I just kept reading "a little more... a little more" and before I knew it I was done with the book. Very engaging and lovable character. While I was reading 2 gentlemen sat talking at a table near me, one of whom had a light British accent- which became the voice of the father. :o)
Will be looking for my own copy in my favorite used bookstores!
Emailing Raerae shortly to get her address to pass on.
