I've read this book so many times that I can't remember. There have been times where I just sat and read this book in one sitting. This story truly touches your heart. The story of Cynthia Ann Parker is one of courage and then love and then devotion to the tribe that made her family and one of their own. A slice of history that is worth reading about because it scope is broader than just Cynthia's story. It is about the Comanches and their struggle not to be put into the reservations and it is about Texas. I hope that you give this story a chance. It is very inspiring. It makes me cry everytime I read it.

danke Annadlx

A book I would have overlooked without bookcrossing. Usually I'm not into stories about indians - let's see where it'll get me.

Journal Entry 5 by rem_SJJ-315643 on Saturday, April 22, 2006
That book captivated me totally - and I would've been the last to assume this.
I liked the descriptive and lively language, although I had some problems with it (those terms related to the Indian way of life - argh). The parts about the growing-up of Cynthia Ann/ Naduah and the description of the Comanche's living and culture I liked best (so... that's most of the book). But their struggles with the Texans and the changes everything went through are another important part of the story, and regardless of me liking it or not, it had to be told. (Unfortunately I have to admit, that I dislike the Texans even more now...)

Thank you for that book, Annadlx, I would never have thought about reading it by myself. I would have missed a good book. ;o)

The book already arrived at Fandorina's as far as I know...

Journal Entry 7 by Fandorina from Hildesheim, Niedersachsen Germany on Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Arrived today with a few other favorite books. I'm looking forward to reading it!

I've finally finished this book and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I knew very little about the Comanche background and thus I found the historical facts very interesting. Unfortunately, the story contained lots and lots of details in the beginning (I was pretty bored sometimes and had to make myself go on reading) and the ending was way too fast (so many years, so few pages).
Thanks a lot for this beautiful story!
The book is already on its way to lesezeichen.

It has arrived well and I have never heard about it. But I used to read a lot of "stories about Indians" when I was you so I'm gonna give it a try!

Received this one just now. Thanks very much.
As seems to be Sod's Law, I have received 6 other bookrings before this one in the last few days. So it might take some time before I start this one. I'll try to be quick.

I've just given up. After 56 pages which didn't do anyhing for me, I think it's time to admit to myself that I won't enjoy the other 530 or so pages either.
I've never been much (or rather: at all) into Indian stories (never felt like reading Karl May and never liked any films with Indians in them either) but when I saw this one, I thought it was a good opportunity to get over my non-interest in this. I failed, though.
The book wasn't interesting to me at all.

This seems to be the last book in this surprise ring...
And since I'm interested in Indians (or- politically correct - Native Americans) - I have even written my "Facharbeit" in school about them ;-) ... I am looking forward to read this one!

Journal Entry 14 by kiki66 from Gauting, Bayern Germany on Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Well, I'm sorry, I have to say that I've given up as well..
The book was simply too cruel for me. I don't know whether having a little baby myself makes me more sensitive or not... but this detailed description of the horror at the beginning was just too much for me.
After a while I was asking myself whether I really have to read this - and the answer was - no -...
I know it is a true story (somehwat) and things like that might really have happened. But I don't have to read it.

So the book is already on its way to Berlin....

Das Buch ist sicher bei mir in Berlin gelandet. Ich lese gerade zwei ´Biographien von "Native Americans". Mal sehen wie das Buch in diese Lesereihe paßt.

RELEASE NOTES:

Thanks a lot Anna for organising this ring. I really loved the book, maybe it will never have the same signifiance it has to you, but it was special...
I think what I liked best was Cynthia and her borther's childhood with the comanches, their peculiar way of life, and the fact that we had so many points of view - everyone's in fact.
Now, there is something I have to mention about this book. I never finished it. I don't know how it ends... or, I do know, but I didn't want to read it... so, for me it ended sometime before Cynthia got pregnant for the third time and her life was as good as it could be...
so, thanks again Anna :) it was an adventure...

now, it's going to Ana in Portugal, enjoy...

Ride the Wind is not an easy read! Lucia St Clair Robson does know how to write a good story and she keeps us enthralled till the end in the story based on the true facts known of the life of Cynthia Ann Parker.

Cynthia Ann's story is unique because she was adopted by the tribe, raised by them, married one of the last great Comanche chief's and ended up feeling her rescue was another kidnapping of sorts that kept her away from the people she loved. It's an emotional journey to follow Cynthia Ann from the time she is taken to her new family, through her acceptance of her way of life, the knowledge that other captives weren't treated like her and her identification as a true Comanche, an important member of their society in her own right. No doubt Robson took many liberties with Cynthia Ann's story to fill in the blanks but the result feels real and moving.

The books gives very interesting details of the Comanche culture and society. It is hard to reconcile the People's behaviour towards their own and the children they adopted and the way they treated the older ones who became slaves. How they understood and respected nature with their savagery in battle and towards their prisoners. It's a culture oriented towards warfare as being a great warrior was what men aspired to be and in a period where the clashes with the new settlers in Texas were growing violence and death were very much an every day ocurrence. But their organised society and bigger respect for nature makes wonder what we could have learned from their way of life.

A must read for every person interested in native americans and the history of Texas.

Grade: B+

Arrived safely today. Big ring in front of it, I'll try to get to it soon.
Thanks!!!

I thought this would be a quick read, but I found it very slow-going, mostly because the scenes described were so searing that often I had to stop and do something else. I found so much of this story very painful, all the more so in that this is yet another true chapter in the oh so violent history of the United States. I finally read the end of the book on the train coming home from my holiday, and rather wished I could weep more freely in the privacy of my home. Glad to have read it though, and even though I've since read another book and a half, find myself thinking back on it and the characters at odd moments. Excellent read, thanks so much for making it available.
