Fascinating!

To be honest I didn't really know what a geisha was before I read this book. It is so removed from life as I know it that it sometimes was hard to picture what the author wanted the reader to see. In fact it couldn't be much further from my life!

It's a bit brutal at times and although there are luxuries available to geishas that aren't available to the normal 'man on the street' I don't think it would be a good exchange. The geishas seem trapped by circumstance and from my point of view would be pitied, not revered.

Thank you Jenny72. I could hardly beleive my eyes when I got home tonight and saw the book in the mailbox! Already here!!!??? I have been meaning to read it for such a long time. On another note, I am glad your daughter liked the stamps. I will keep her in mind throughout the year (I already got a few from Germany today)... surely I'll be able to send another batch at some point - but I'll let you know first. Tell her thanks for her little note and Santa!;-) Cheers and thanks again!

I actually really enjoyed reading this book, and it got me very intrigued in Geishas and their role in Japanese society. Their lives are of an interesting mix, as they are not just fancy call-girls. By learning about arts, they appear to keep traditions alive, and ther relations and the way they are treated is certainly well codified. It is difficult for a westerner to fully understand their position I guess.
