There was a time when I really liked this book, but that was before I'd really read any history in depth. Now I found it predictable, ultra-conservative, and badly-written. Too many kings and queens, too much emphasis on the Victorians. 17 pages for the period 1841 - 1852, whilst the entire Anglo-Saxon civilisation gets 12 pages? Rubbish. But the facts are here, and if you've never read any history at all, you could do worse than starting here. Just allow it to inspire you to dig deeper - and don't take every opinion as gospel....
