Light, easy read - ideal for a holiday.

On its way to cayenne now.

Journal Entry 6 by Cayenne-UK from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Friday, October 28, 2005
Received as part of the bookring from flanners.

This was a light fluffy read, and not the sort of book I would normally read. (I read it to explore a local author, especially as she has set it in Hampshire).

This is an interesting story about 3rd age individuals in a village, who form a group and find that it helps them deal with issues in their lives. On the whole the book is well written and the characters well described. I did feel though, that some events could have been expanded upon, adding to the drama a bit more. Otherwise, a pleasant read.

It has arrived safely in France! Good timing too, as I don't have any rings or rays waiting.

Sorry, I forgot to journal this at the right time! I posted it on to catsalive in Australia last week.

I found the book very easy to read, ideal for a holiday. It's a bit like chick lit for an older generation.

What a lovely book. I read it straight through today - my last day of Easter break, what else would I do but read?! I loved Ursula's naughty angel and the gang are a great bunch. A lovely idea for them all to get together & the barter system was brilliant. Much easier in a small village but I don't know if it would work in the city. That each of them gained strength from the group is, I suppose, what community is supposed to be about, and once was. We're all so busy these days.

Thanks Rudifun23. I will send this off to janey-canuck as soon as I receive an address.

Oh, I'm sorry, but this book was just awful!! The premise was good, the writing good as well, but it felt to me like this book had originally been 100 pages longer and someone went through with a pair of scissors and deleted entire sentences and paragraphs and then took what was left and moved a couple of paragraphs to different places in the book.

Someone mentioned character development - with so many characters, that is hard to do and I thought a fairly good job was done but there were a couple of things that really annoyed me - Charlie doing complete 180s in a few spots (the buskers scene comes to mind - first he is yelling about it and then 30 seconds later, he is joining in? I think somewhere a paragraph was cut there). Other than minor details like that, I found that I got to know the characters pretty well, given the shortness of the book.

I feel that the timeline on this may have been a bit too squished - things should have been stretched out longer. The pub comes to mind when Rosemary gets that phone call and then Charlie comes in. And then, *poof* just a few pages later, there is a wedding and Bunny is a bridesmaid?? Did I miss something there? I didn't realize that the bride and Bunny were so close. The Amanda thing had so much potential - but it appeared and then was gone. Again, I come back to someone deleting entire sentences and paragraphs. The book felt like a bad edit job.

And at the end - what in God's name were Finn and Charlie pointing and running at? The angel? Policemen? An ice cream cart?

I've pm-ed for the next address, and it'll get off in the mail when I receive it. Thanks for sharing Rudifun23.

It arrived last night. Since Rudifun defined it as a "frothy" novel I have been dying to find out what she means.

At times, this book read like it had been written for an adult literacy program. The writing was that simple, redundant and boring. In a way, this was a bad mockery of Anne Tyler's style. She is the queen of redundant writing, but at least she can hold on to your interest. Scuba dancing did not, so by the time Finn found a job I had had it. Sorry!
