Journal Entry 1 by KlingonLady from Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Thursday, September 22, 2005
He's a service dog. He's not supposed to be petted.").

Journal Entry 4 by lesezeichen from Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Saturday, October 29, 2005
Oh sorry to say that, this book did not work for me ;-) It is well written and the different perspectives are an interesting idea, but from the beginning I had misgivings about the subject being treated in the form of a novel and those misgivings did not subside... But as everybody else seem to be greatly moved by this book, I am sure the next readers will enjoy it much more than I did. I've sent out the book today to Cardiff to Tracy R (and when taking it to the post office I picked up a book sent to me *from* Cardiff (from scarlett 17). That's what I like about bookcrossing! ;-)

Journal Entry 9 by Elsita from Worthing, West Sussex United Kingdom on Saturday, January 21, 2006
I wasn't expecting this book to be like this... I cried so much in the end... Was it fair? No one will ever have the answer to taht question, only God knows that... In the end, this wasn't a story about a 13 year old wanting medical emancipation from her parents, was about a girl, Anna, that was born to be...her sister's keeper. Thanks, so much, TracyR, for the chance of reading this book! I'm just waiting for Stoxasths's adress, to send the book along. I took a few citations I liked most: If you use one of your children to save the life of another, are you beibg a good mother or a very bad one? 'At the beginning of this hearing, Mr. Alexander, you said that none of us is obligated to go into a fire and save someone else from a burning building. But that all changes if you're a parent and the person in that burning building is your child. If that's the case, not only would everyone understand if you ran in to get your child - the'd practically expect it of you. (...) In my life, though, that building was on fire, one of my children was in it - and the only opportunity to save her was to send in my other child, because she was the only one who knew the way.' 'There should be a statute of limitation on grief. A rule book that says it is all right to wake up crying, but only for a month. That after forty-two days you will no longer turn with your hearth racing, certain you have heard her call out your name.' -----> Edited 24 Jan. : Stoxasths didn't respond to my PM's, going to send the book to Karenlea.

Journal Entry 12 by Karenlea from Glendale, California USA on Wednesday, February 15, 2006
I really enjoyed this book. This is the first Jodi Picoult book that I have read and I know that I will pick up her other novels. It was such a sad story, I cried several times throughout. There was one aspect of the book that I did not enjoy. I would have cut out the backstory of Campbell and Julia. I did not find that it added to the story and I simply was not interested in those particular characters. I would have liked an expansion of Kate and Jesse. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and writing. I will be mailing this to the next reader tomorrow morning!!!

Journal Entry 14 by dripitspal from Plainfield, Illinois USA on Wednesday, March 22, 2006
What a wonderful story. I cried so many times throughout the entire book and knew that no matter what the outcome, there could never be a truly happy ending. I agree with Karenlea that the Cambell/Julia backstory could have been left out, but I actually enjoyed the characters, so I didn't mind the interruptions from the main story. I was a little disappointed that Jesse wasn't fleshed out more. Overall I can't really complain, because I enjoyed the book so much. I will send this on to Booksnbeer sometime in the next week.

Journal Entry 15 by BooksnBeer from Annandale, Virginia USA on Monday, April 03, 2006
Received this in today's mail. I have one other bookring before this one, but I will get to this ASAP. My girlfriend really liked this book and highly recommended. I'm tempted to read the journal entries but, I don't want to find out too much of the story. I will close this journal entry, without reading the other entries, and write again when I have finished the book.

Journal Entry 16 by BooksnBeer from Annandale, Virginia USA on Monday, April 24, 2006
I really enjoyed this book. I have already signed up for one other Jodi Picoult book. The characters were completely engaging. I did really like reading the issues from each character’s different perspective. I found myself teary eyed on a number of pages. The topic is one that is unfortunately too close to a lot of people today. When do you say “enough” – I almost feel that I have been too cavalier to say I know when I would say enough. Decisions are very different today when I am feeling well, then when I am not. I will reserve my answer for a different time. I do hate the ending. I could see it coming – I wish Jodi had written it differently – it was too quick a decision. This is an excellent book club discussion book. I'll be sending this along shortly.

Journal Entry 19 by bc-del-20080226 on Wednesday, June 07, 2006
I should have paid more attention to the entries regarding the crying bit...my husband came home today and I was sobbing for a good 15 minutes he was trying to figure out what I was crying about. I did not expect this ending at all, and it made me cry so much. Not only that, but my s-i-l is a kidney transplant child and so I loved this book for introducing to me emotions etc around transplants etc. I never thought about how parents make decisions at the time and think it is a good decision, but will always wonder what is a good decision. Then there is the patient who is living only because the parents want her to live. So my sister-in-law could very well be frustrated with her life and living it because someone made that decision for her without really asking her, or even if they did, she was too young to answer anyway. Boy, I loved this book. Time to pass this one on.

Journal Entry 21 by DianaCoats from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Monday, June 19, 2006
24 hours later...I am done with this book. I usually read a book a week so the very fact that I finished in a day should tell you something. I think that Jodi Piccoult has really matured as a writer. Although I have always liked her I often thought she "overwrote". I thought this book was very thought out and flowed perfectly. I LIKED knowing the story of Campell and Julia...I thought it enriched the book as a whole...but then I'm a Robert Altman fan...who directed Short Cuts and Grand Canyon...the king of intersecting stories. I also cried...three times to be exact...I was surprised at how intensely I felt the characters pain. I highly recommend this one...my favorite of hers besides "the Pact".

Journal Entry 30 by isisjem from Oxford, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 21, 2006
This was the first Jodi Picoult I've read and I can see that it won't be the last. Here Picoult deals with the complex and thought provoking subject of whether a child should be born to save another sibling and at what point the "designer baby" should stop providing treatment. I can't say this is an issue I'd thought about too much in the past. I had seen articles in the papers about couples having a baby to save another ie for stem cells but never really gave to much thought to what happens when more "donations" are needed perhaps throughout the childs life. I thought it was masterly how the story was told from different characters view points, so just as you thought you'd got to grips with the arguement from one side you got presented with anothers view. All the characters were likeable and real - Picoult's grip on people and relationships reminds me of Judy Blume. I really enjoyed this and thought the ending was very clever. But so sad...
