Picked this up at the local ubs, Willow Tree Books, to send to someone special for sending books for the book fair.
From the cover -
Ambitious, but never seeming so, Kent Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers. From simple elements, Haruf achieves a novel of wisdom and grace - a narrative that builds in strength and feeling until, as in a choral chant, the voices in the book surround, transport, and lift the reader off the ground.

Thank you, MaryZee!! I like the "someone special" part of the journal entry - everyone should be so lucky to hear that once in awhile. I have wanted to read this one for some time now but never seemed to find it at my local ubs. I promise to journal it again after I have finished reading it.
I really enjoyed this gentle, unassuming book. It was just the right thing for me to read right now. My only problem is that the author didn't explain the situation with Ike and Bobby's mother - I know why he didn't do it but it doesn't make me any happier. The McPheron brothers were my favorite characters. Thanks again, MaryZee, for sending it to me.
Hanging on to this for awhile before sending it back out into the BC world.

Mailed to Hanrahan-Siudy for her personal 50 State Challenge.
arrived safe and sound
The story revolves around a number of lonely different characters who intertwine in each others lives. None of the characters were fully delveloped. If I had to guess the theme of the book it would be lonley people find one another.
Thank you for the book, Hanrahan-Siudy! This will be the first book by Kent Haruf for me. I'll read it as soon as I am done with the bookrings.

I think that lonely people finding each other is quite a good theme for the book. But I agree that the characters would need a bit more development.
However, I liked the the book. I enjoyed reeding it even if it left some questions unanswered.
Now this pleasant book needs a new reader.
