An interesting read.

I am sending this out as part of the Pocket Penguins Mystery bookray.

"Comprising the expanded first chapter and expanded afterword of Hegemony or Survival, Doctrines and Visions is an irrefutable analysis of America's pursuit of total domination and the catastrophic consequences that are sure to follow."

I agree, an interesting read, and pretty scary. But what should we do about it?

Final book in the ray : I will now pass on to Rahar109.

I struggled with this, I really did. A Private Fraser book! Never read Chomsky before, and never want to read him again.

PMing Wilksie for her address.

Chomsky seems to criticise just about everything the US government does. Is he right? I don’t know. Could American foreign policy have catastrophic consequences? Almost certainly. Does the west turn a blind eye? Yes, quite often. Chomsky mentions one of my pet themes – the daily death of thousands of children from treatable disease. Another frightening little snippet mentions that US presidents have been misinformed as to the true effects of a nuclear war. Do they think such things are winnable? Is this true? Chomsky gives a numbered reference – but no references are included – a major failing of this book.
So – a scary little book but one that I find myself unqualified to criticise, I’m just not informed enough.

Posting on as soon as I get the next person's address.

A lot of information I already knew, but also quite some new information which did scare me. All in all, a good reminder about the situation of this planet, and what we should be really careful about.

Since I seem to be the last person in the ray, I'll release this one some time in the (near) future.

Well, it's taken me a while to get round to this, especially when you consider what a short book it is.

Essentially, it's a couple of extended essays on US power in 2004. Although that necessarily means it's dated somewhat, the points Chomsky makes remain relevant. His examination of US influence on supposedly 'democratic' countries is fascinating. It's no secret that the US likes to interfere in the affairs of sovereign nations, but the thinking behind these policies is laid bare here. Vital reading for anyone who wants a more rounded understanding of international affairs than could ever be gained just from watching the news.
