Imagine you find a shoe box full of pictures of your childhood, more or less in chronological order, and each photo triggers a memory. Then you decide to write down those memories, and your humorous tone is so sharp that your narrative ends up being quite serious.

Well, that’s A Girl Named Zippy. At first it was easy to just be taken by the comical and self-deprecating observations of Haven Kimmel, but there is more down there. The humor is just skin-deep.

This book reminds me of a comment i heard once about the paintings of Joan Miró (http://www.euroresidentes.com/pintores/miro.htm). Someone said “A five-year-old can paint like that”. And maybe so, but the amazing thing is that Miró wasn’t five when he did them. Haven Kimmel writes in an effortless, simplistic manner that is FAR from being simple. I found that amazing.

I'm going to put this on a BookRay one of these days.

A nice, light read. Growing up in the same era, this book reminded me of my childhood and the innocence we shared. A time before computers, cell phone's, ipods, etc. Makes me realize the vast difference between my generation and my childrens. Now I feel really old! :)

I sent this to RlyLv2Rd today via USPS Media Mail. Thanks for sharing GorgeousGlo!

What a wonderful book. I had it recommended to me by some of my local buddies and had no idea what to expect...it was delightful.

Quick, light, and amusing this book seemed to focus on lviving in a different time. It sort of made me long for my childhood. It conveyed a different mentality, and the true inner workings of a child's mind.

Off to glade1, today!

Well, this was a wonderful little book! I laughed out loud so often my children started complaining, and yet there were many touching moments. Kimmel has a wonderful way of getting inside a child's mind. She reminded me a bit of a real-life Junie B. Jones (Junie B. is a children's series by Barbara Park that has a rather "sparky" heroine too).

And then, after laughing my way through the book, I had to break into tears on the last page. Although the book gives a rather skewed vision of Skippy's parents (what did her father DO, anyway?), we can see that she was raised with love and that her folks were willing to sacrifice (at least I think it would have been a challenge for them) to help a dream come true.

I'm very glad I got to share in this bookring--I say this all the time, but here's ANOTHER book I probably would not have read if not for Bookcrossing!

I have already PMed TheBowieFollies for an address and hope to get this moving again soon.

Update: Mailed to TheBowieFollies via media rate on 12-24-05.

Finished this one in one day, I have to say although I could not relate personally even though I did grow up in the 70s (Liverpool,England) albeit, it was quite whimsical and not without belly laughs. There seems to be alot of pain behind the laughter, and this is why I believe it was written as such. All in all and endearing read and the card game semantics gave me a proper giggle, this is a wonderful slice of Americana, cheers gorgeous glo for letting me participate..I have PMed Cray17 and as soon as I get her address i will post it.
Happy New Year to all
Veronica.

I enjoyed this ride down nostalgia lane very much! I grew up with many of the same things Zippy did (and in the same year) - the toys, the particular hobbies/crafts, the pets, etc. - so I could really identify with her. I was also much like her when it came to a dislike of being frilly/girly (i.e. wearing dresses was a horror to me!). I believe we would have been fast friends had we grown up in the same town. I am eager to read the follow-up to this novel called "She Got Up Off the Couch." Perhaps it will shed some light on the family problems that seemed to be there just under the surface in her writing but were just never spelled out to the reader. Thank you for sharing this with me GorgeousGlo - I'm still smiling.

I will mail this off to Rudifun23 either Friday or Saturday of this week.

Mailed Monday, Jan. 27th. - sorry for the delay.

Got it! Looks great fun.

Journal Entry 17 by Rudifun23 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, May 4, 2006
Didn't really like it, thought the style was a bit church newsletter-y but that may just be because I've not read many memoirs. Perhaps I might like her novels better.
Maybe I was a weird kid myself because I didn't find her very odd! I did laugh out loud at the other little girl that kept chanting "Solid Gold FM" though.
Have PM'd Elina to pass it on.

Journal Entry 18 by Elina from Espoo, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Tuesday, May 9, 2006
Arrived today. Thanks!!

Journal Entry 19 by Elina from Espoo, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, May 31, 2006
In the beginning I had hard time getting into the book, but then the middle part was a bit easier. It wasn't a bad book and I think that if I had read it in a bit better time I might have really liked it.
Thanks GorgeousGlo for the opportunity to read it.

Now Zippy will be traveling to Piiku as soon as I get her address. I'll try to get it in to the post by the end of this week.

Got the book today, thanks! I have to finish one bookring before reading this one, but it should not take more than a couple of weeks.

This was a fun and light read. Even though I did have a bike like Zippy's back in 60's, and even got a similar electric organ from my parents, for some reason I related more to Zippy's mother..

Thanks for sharing Gorgeous Glo. Sending to nikel27 tomorrow, enjoy!

I received it! I'm eager to read it, but I have some other rings visiting me at the moment. I'll try to do my best in order not to make the next one waiting too much. Thanks!

I really enjoyed this book! It is both funny and moving at the same time. I' m so happy I got to know this author that I surely will hunt for the sequel of this book. Sometimes it was a bit difficult for me to get all from the idiomatic expressions and the slang, but nonetheless I was compelled to go further in my reading. And-no doubt about it- I was more than satisfied with it. Thank you GorgeousGlo: for sharing the book and for letting me know about Haven Kimmel! I'll contact the next for address!

Just received! Looks like fun - looking forward to starting it.

Journal Entry 27 by dicentra-tn from Nashville, Tennessee USA on Sunday, September 24, 2006
Really enjoyed this book. It masquerades as simple, but she conveys so much with her descriptions of events and characters. I'm currently also reading Beach Music by Pat Conroy, and find the contrast interesting; he spends pages upon pages with flowery descriptions, and I feel he never quite captures the magic of the places and people he tries to describe. Meanwhile, in a few short sentences, Kimmel can nail a situation so that you feel you're right there with her.

All this, and I did choke up at the end.

I thought someone had been added to the bookray, but now it appears I am the final contestant...? Please let me know; I know a couple of people I might send this on to if no one is waiting.

Journal Entry 28 by dicentra-tn from Nashville, Tennessee USA on Tuesday, September 26, 2006
Since I seem to be the last in line in the bookray, I'm sending this to a friend in Texas. Hoping to lure her into the bookcrossing world (or at least amuse her with the book).

Journal Entry 29 by annie-t from Houston, Texas USA on Sunday, October 15, 2006
I received this book in the mail from my semi-virtual music buddy, Carol. It has languished on my counter, and then my work desk, and then my nightstand for a week or so. On this gray, rainy Sunday morning, sitting in my quiet empty house (quiet except for a Craig Carothers cd spinning softly in the next room) with coffee in a mossy green mug one of my best friends threw and an empty cheese danish plate cleared off to the side, I decided it was finally time to crack this book open and see what's inside...
