From the back cover:
"Kinsey had been out for most of the morning and the client was waiting in the corridor.
Nikki Fife. The eight years since Kinsey had seen her had left no visible scars. But now she was looking for the help that only a detective could provide.
For whoever had killed her husband, it wasn't Nikki Fife. And if his wife wasn't the murderer, that meant someone else was ..."

Received today from Hapireada. I'm going to try and read the whole series in order and have already signed up for a ring for 'B is for...' so thought I'd better get my skates on and find this one first!!
I'm looking forward to reading it, I've got another book that I've just started and then I'll be straight onto it!

I found this very enjoyable! I didn't guess myself 'who dunnit' and I loved the way it was all uncovered at the end. I did think Kinsey would've known better than to get involved with someone connected to the case though!! I'm sure she's learnt her lesson...

Received from CelticStar and it's at No. 3 spot on TBR.
I give it a 10, even if one plot point was unbelievable. It was immaterial to the outcome and Sue Grafton is such a great writer. I've probably read this one before, but, fortunately, couldn't remember enough of it to be annoying. Guess I'll have to read the rest, again, too.

Was waiting for me at my doorstep tonight, thanks so much!
From the back cover:
"My name is Kinsey Millhone. I'm a private investigator, licensed by the State of California. I'm thirty-two years old, twice divorced, no kids. The day before yesterday I killed someone and the fact weighs heavily on my mind..."
The first one of this very good crime series. I have read 'H is for Homicide' and 'I is for Innocence', so I guess I can give up the notion of reading them in order. 'B is for Burglar' is on the way to me and C and L and R are on my shelf, so I better get busy. The books are good fun. Short and sweet. A bit like Anita Blake without vampires and werewolves would be. I keep picturing Holly Hunter in the title role, if they should ever decide to make this into a TV series... I even figured out who-dunnit for once, and why! Well, ok, only about half way through the book.
8/10: Good, solid book that I would recommend to others.
Continuing this bookray, here are the participants so far:
1. Risa29, Luxembourg, shipping Europe / International if needed
2. bluejazzyfish, UK, shipping internationally
3. candy-is-dandy, UK, shipping anywhere
Update 17/09/06:
4. Suebo, Philadelphia, USA, International shipping - didn't reply...
5. kirstymorgan, NSW, Australia, shipping Australia preferred - dropped out.....
So candy-is-dandy is last in line and has the choice.... Love the puppy story and don't mind at all! ;-)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
On its merry way to Luxembourg...
The book arrived two days ago, on Friday. Thank you cathepsut for sending it.
As I have several exams to supervise next week I will probably be able to finish the book in a decent spam of time.
As I have several exams to supervise next week I will probably be able to finish the book in a decent spam of time.
Thanks to those exams I supervised, I've already finished the book.
I rather liked it, though it didn't have me hanging on every word. I would well have been able to put it down. The story is nice but the protagonist, Kinsey Millhone, is not somebody I would befriend in real life.
I might try the second book of the series, though, just to see, if she can capture my sympathy then.
Thank you cathepsut for including me in the ray. As soon as I have bluejazzyfish's address I will send it on.

The book started on its journey to bluejazzyfish this morning.
It was wonderful to see this book in my postbox this afternoon- thank you Risa29- for sending- and cathepsut -for letting me join this ring. What a lovely postcard collection inside the book.
I was not a huge fan of detective books before reading this book- I am now. I really enjoyed this book- and could not put it down during the second half.
I'm now on my way out to post it to candy-is-dandy.

Well, I've read the first one of the series and enjoyed it. It didn't seem like a first book to me as it didn't dwell on setting the scene and spending ages filling in Kinsey's background. Instead info from her past was thread into the story quite naturally. I found her likeable and realistic, a more serious Stephanie Plum and look forward to reading more of these books (B is patiently waiting).
I seem to have got into several of these crime series at the mo - Janet Evanovich, Kathy Riech etc but they are all sufficiently different to ensure I can keep the heroines separate in my mind.
I also have an apology to make. This book is very well travelled and you would expect it to be a bit dog-eared. Well unfortunately our new cuddly, bouncy, terror puppy managed to get it down from the table and chewed one corner a bit - the cover is slightly torn (now patched) and there are little pin-pricks of puppy dog teeth in some pages but it is still entirely readable - sorry everyone.

Oh dear, I finished this several weeks ago and forgot that I hadn't journalled it!
Having read the second of the series first, it's interesting to see Millhone's character at its rawest. A pretty good first of a series, I would say, though lacking the humour of the second one. A few rough edges but still a good yarn. I didn't guess what was coming until I was spoon-fed it, but then I don't tend to try to work out whodunnit. (My work is all about analysing, so it's nice to have a break from that.)
It's a good, quick, easy read and has certainly made me want to read more of the series.
Will take to the Chelmsford and Ipswich meets to see if anyone is really keen to start at the beginning! (Keen enough to take dog-eared literally!)

Finally...
started with the first volume.
Hope to get the B for... ASAP.
Was a real page turner, but a bit disappointed by the ending as I guessed the murderer quite soon.
