this says free exclusive from ottakars on it, which is probably why the isbn search thing won't work... though it is the full book, not just a preview :)

a really enjoyable teen-fantasy. kind of scary and suspenseful, though less of a crossover book than sabriel, lirael and abhorsen. recommended for fans of garth nix. book got wet, though it is still very readable.

Thank you so much for sending this book!! I'm really thrilled that it arrived at my place, and I can't wait to read it.
This book isn't translated (yet?) in Dutch, and I hadn't heard of this title before. Since I totally loved Garth Nix' Old Kingdom trilogy (but don't am very impressed with this Keys to the Kingdom series), I'm very curious about this novel.

from the back:
In a futuristic urban wasteland, evil Overlords have decreed that no child shall live a day past his fourteenth birthday. On that Sad Birthday, the child is the object of an obscene harvest resulting in the construction of a machine like creature whose sole purpose is to kill.

The mysterious Shade – once a man, but now more like the machines he fights – recruits the few children fortunate enough to escape. With luck, cunning, and skill, four of Shade's children come closer than any to discovering the source of the Overlords' power – and the key to their downfall. But the closer the children get, the more ruthless Shade seems to become...

Wow... That was an impressive read! Hard to put down because I really wanted to know what would happen next. More SF than the previous books of Garth Nix I've read.
The book reminded me a bit of China Miéville's "Perdido Street Station".

Arrived safely in Utrecht. I've just started reading a book with almost 500 pages (Schijnbewegingen - Floortje Zwigtman), so it will take a while before I'll start in Shade's Children. Thanks for raying and sending.

Indeed more science fiction than fantasy, yet a good read full of 'high-speed escapes' and suspension. Off to next reader.

Wow, Galdriel1972 was right, this book really was addictive, I could hardly put it down!
I really liked this fast-paced, action-packed scifi, so I read it in just 2 days. :-)
I particularly liked that between every chapter there is a transcript from Shade's archive files, so you slowly gain more insight in the way Shade works.

If I come across more books by Garth Nix, I will definitely read them!

I was very curious about this book from Garth Nix. It was quite excited but not as good as Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen. Indeed more SF than fantasy and I believe I prefer fantasy above SF.

I send this book to a friend who like Garth Nix a lot. I hope he wil become a bookcrosser too.
