This book was on the Sequoyah Book Award Masterlist for Children for the year 1980.
Sponsored by the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA), the annual Sequoyah Book Award is a student’s choice award presented since 1959. The program added a Young Adult literature award in 1987. Books chosen for the annual Sequoyah masterlist are selected by two committees of OLA members. Each member of the committee reads over 100 books before recommending titles for the masterlists.
During the school year, young Oklahomans from grades three through junior high are encouraged to read the titles from the masterlist. Students must read or listen to three books in order to cast a vote. The winning book is announced in February and the award is presented during the annual Oklahoma Library Association’s spring conference.
With this award, Oklahoma honors the Native American leader, Sequoyah, for his unique achievement in creating the Cherokee syllabary. In so doing, he created a way to preserve his people’s language and culture.

From the back cover:
Jess Aaron's greatest ambition is to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. He's been practicing all summer and can't wait to see his classmate's faces when he beats them all. But on the first day of school, a new kid, a new girl, boldly crossing over to the boy's side of the playground, outruns everyone. That's not a very promising beginning for a friendship, but Jess and Leslie Burke become inseperable. It doesn't matter to Jess that Leslie dresses funny, or that her family has a lot of money - but no TV. Leslie has imagination. Together, she and Jess create Terabithia, a magical kingdom in the woods where the two of them reign as king and queen and their imaginations set the only limits. Then one morning a terrible tragedy occurs. Only when Jess is able to come to grips with this tragedy does he finally understand the strength and courage Leslie has given him.

I found this book to be very powerful. At first I thought it was just a nice story. A story of two 5th grade friends that come from different backgrounds but find something in common when it comes to their imaginary kingdom of Terabithia.
I was very saddened when the tragedy occured. It took me quite by surprise. The title of the chapter is "No!" and I find the chapter well named as that was exactly the thought that I had as I was reading it.
I would recommend this book to anyone even though it is not the typical "happy ending" type of book. I think that the uncommon turn of events is what made me like the book.

Yay! This has made it to me safe and sound! I picked it up on Saturday (couldn't get online to journal until today).
I've already started reading it and have PM'd the next person, so it can continue its journey quickly.
Thanks so much for sharing this, lauraloo29

What a well-written and touching book. I haven't seen the movie, and not sure if I want to. I don't think the movie could ever reach the impact this story has. Thanks so much for sharing this!
I haven't heard back from Aisling78, yet, but will send the book her way as soon as I do.

Sending to the next person!
This came in the mail today...unfortunately it's bad timing...I just started working today after a 3 month hiatus. :o( I'll get started on it this evening, however. It doesn't look like it should take very long to get through.
I'd read this book in grade school but hardly remembered it. I thought I wanted to see the movie too but like yvensong, now I'm not so sure it could even compare. I can't remember the last time a book made me cry, either. Very powerful. I have the address of the next person on the list so I'll be sending this out as soon as I can!
This arrived while I was on vacation. I plan on starting it today (I need a break from the book I'm currently reading) and getting it moving again as soon as I can.
I loved this book almost as much as I loved Paterson's Jacob Have I Loved! I was really surprised I found this one so good; as it didn't seem like it would be something I'd like. I really want to see the movie now to compare.
Thank you, jenn7747 for starting this ray! I'm waiting for the next person's address before I can get this moving again.

Thank you for sharing this book. It''s one that I''ve always wanted to read but could never bring myself to buy. Go figure. I look forward to reading it, and will do very soon so that it can get moving on to the next person.
My 132nd read of 2007.
I had heard many wonderful things about this book, but to tell you the truth, I don''t see what all the fuss was about. I really wasn''t impressed. This was nothing of what I was expecting it to be, I thought it was going to be more fantasy-like, and certainly didn''t realize it was going to have a death in it. The whole story just kind of bummed me out.
I will send this one to the next reader once she responds with her mailing address.
