Found this in a box of free books on 4th Avenue and 12th Street in New York, NY on August 26th, 2005. I think I will pass this along to a new reader.

Fat Girl
For every woman who’s ever felt sad, bad, blue and mad about “overweight”, here's a sharp Lily-Tomlinesque monologue on one woman’s triumph over guilt. FAT GIRL: One Woman’s Way Out (Harper San Francisco) chronicles the struggle and subsequent victory over a lifelong compulsive eating problem.

FAT GIRL is an artist’s approach to a problem that has been scienced to death. It focuses on feelings. The story is told in vivid images and emotions which involve the reader deeply, helping her face her own feelings about food and herself. In poetic prose and over fifty sensitive drawings, Irene O’Garden traces her journey from childhood through maturity, from guilt and self-loathing to discovery and joy. FAT GIRL is a fresh perspective on a common problem, and above all, a very loving book.

“A poetic, funny, deeply touching look at the problem of overeating…O’Garden’s poetry glistens.”- - The Denver Post

“Ohmigod this book rules! Her story is so compelling and soulfully written that it almost made me cry. I love books like that.”- - Sassy Magazine

“Very moving. I couldn’t put down. I was impressed with the writing and the way O’Garden was able to write from inside addiction and make the mechanics of addiction clear. I know this is one of the books I’ll be buying by the dozen to give to people.”- - Ellen Burstyn

“The pain and anger of overweight is clearly delineated, and the struggle over power and powerlessness is presented in a quite poetic, dramatic way. O’Garden teaches us about addiction without being preachy or seeking converts. Her simple statements arise from secret thoughts and deceits and thus show the crisis of personal integrity that a fat person suffers.”- - Judi Hollis, author of FAT AS A FAMILY AFFAIR and FAT & FURIOUS, and director of Hollis Institute

“..a painfully honest little book, illustrated by the author and told in prose, poetry, aphorisms and no small amount of anguish.”- - The Oregonian

I have a couple before it but will get to it very soon (in fact I started reading a bit of it) -- looks like it will be a very quick read. I will journal the book again once read and send it off to the next reader.

Novemeber 5,2005 ~ ~ Read this one quickly (although at times I fought myself). I loved the drawings throughout the book and the final message was great!! I have to admit that I struggled to get through this one and had to fight myself from putting it down and shipping without finishing it.

I feel terrible!!!!!! I received this book with several others as I took packages out of the mailbox on my way to the car. This one must have slipped under the seat, because as I was looking for something else, I came across the unopened package.

When I saw it was a bookray, I gasped, because I try very hard to keep rings and rays moving.

Although, I just started another book - I will set that one aside to read this one, as I can't read two books simultaneously. I will have this one moving by the end of the week.

Again, so sorry :(

Journal Entry 14 by booknhand from San Jose, California USA on Tuesday, February 28, 2006
Finished this book in a couple of nights.

Wasn't my style, but wanted to see what the outcome ended up being.

As a person who has battled the bulge all her life, I did relate to some of what the author said and in the end it really is about finding happiness in who you "are" - not what you look like.

Already have the next person's address and will get this book moving again by the end of this week.

Thanks for sharing.

I received this in the mail over the weekend, but was dealing with Mrfan in the hospital and forgot to journal it! (he is fine). I read this yesterday while doing laundry. At first, I thought that I would have very little in common with the author, but suddenly, it became very interesting to see her growth in her way of thinking. Probably because I have thought so many of these things at one time or another myself.

Thanks for sharing this with us! I will try to get it in the mail soon after I get an address.

This was a very quick read for me. I enjoyed this short, little book. I could relate to the author in so many ways. Losing weight is not about dieting. It all starts inside with how one sees herself. This was inspiring and encouraging to me. And now it's time for this little book to leave the shores of North America and wing its way to Ireland for its next stop with mirp. Happy travels. Thanks to all before me who have passed this along its way!

Interesting little book.

I shipped it to momx3lovesbooks today.

Journal Entry 46 by momx3lovesbooks on Thursday, December 27, 2007
Got this right before Christmas. I have one ring in front of it.

The ideal image of happiness, sex appeal, and fulfillment for women is everywhere: size 8, with every bulge and blemish airbrushed away. Accompany this pervasive image with a lifetime of subtle and none-too-subtle dictates from families, friends and lovers about what it means to be a good girl, and the result is millions of women who think they'll be happy and worthy when, and only when, they manage to tame, trim, subdue, and shrink their biggest enemy: their body.

Every woman who has ever felt sad, bad, blue or mad about her weight will find a kindred spirit in this poignant, funny, and liberating account.

Good little book. If you are planning on finding the hidden diet in this book that'll have the answer to all your dieting woes, you may not find it in this book. IMHO..the answer is there, but you may not beable to personally face it yet.

I have the address for the next person and will be mailing it on my next PO run.

I read the entire book in about 40 minutes. This book had the basis of a really good account of the author's fat life, and struggles with food and eating, but in my opinion the writing style spoiled it all. She could have written in all the emotions we feel when we are struggling with overweight. I was looking for some sadness and some humour, but I didn't really find anything that moved me. There were some passages that I could relate to, like the yo-yo dieting. Lose all the excess weight, be slim for a day and then start to put it all back on again. I also related to the bit where she said she cheated, she wrecked her whole diet, ruined everything, and she was off her diet now.....what for?.....a stupid bite of chicken skin!!
I have only given this book a rating of 4 out of 10, because I think it could have been better written with the real emotion that was behind all that dieting and failure!
I am glad that I had the chance to read the book. Now I am looking for someone else to pass it on to. I think I will try to find someone in England when I go there, because it hasn't been there yet. I am definitely impressed with all the bookcrossers who have kept this book moving and with the journals thay have written. It is always interesting to read what others thought of the book you are about to read, (or have just read). I read every single one of the journals here!

Wow! What a journey this little book has had so far - so pleased to be able to keep it moving, what a shame you didn't have more takers from the UK. I will pm jneni now for her address so I can send the book on straightaway after I've read it. Thanks chamonix44 for including me, and thanks KarenZero for starting it.

Picked this up last night when I went to bed and finished it in one gulp, although when I started it, I felt quite uncomfortable reading it. Kids can be horrible at times. Like chamonix44 I can identify with the yo-yo dieting bit, and other bits and pieces in the book but it wasn't full of laughs. Mind you dealing with weight issues and dieting rarely is!

Thanks for the opportunity to read it though and for the chance to be part of so many JE's for this book. I've pm'd jneni in Singapore for her address and will get it in the post to her as soon as she replies.
