"Anju is the daughter of an upper-caste Calcutta family of distinction. Her cousin Sudha is the daughter of the black sheep of that same family. Sudha is startlingly beautiful; Anju is not. Despite those differences, since the day on which the two girls were born, the same day their fathers died--mysteriously and violently--Sudha and Anju have been sisters of the heart. Bonded in ways even their mothers cannot comprehend, the two girls grow into womanhood as if their fates as well as their hearts were merged."

I really enjoyed the story of these two women. The story is told in alternating chapters of Anju's and Sudha's perspectives.

I'm including this book in booklady331's ABC Virtual Bookbox.

I enjoyed reading this book. I was a little confused at first telling the two "cousins" apart, but other than that the storyline was a very unique experience for me as the setting is Calcutta, India in the 1980s (I think). The culture and corresponding values are quite different but very well explained so I had no trouble understanding the motives and actions of the people in the story. The ending is one of those endings that leave you hanging. You don't know what actually is going to be happening to the characters of the book after the story ends, so you wonder. And then, I decided that the point was that the characters involved would be able to deal with whatever happened in a better-informed and more-experienced way.
