8 out of 10

At first glance, this seems to be whimsical fiction in the mould of Jan Karon; yet as the narrative unfolds, it tackles deeper, harder issues. The unifying theme is the relationships of parents with their children.

This book will be starting on a ring early next week with the running order as follows:
Janiemac75
Heaven-Ali
katisha50
wilksie
cats-eye
beebarf
LyzzyBee
YowlYY

I've so enjoyed this book, I had to do my journal entry right away I finished this book about half an hour go. I don't know where to start. The characters are memorable and you come to really care about them. There are several plot lines which are each fascinating and often moving, and at the same time raise some intresting questions at a deeper level, and its a real page turner. I've had a very busy and tiring week, which meant I didn't finish this as quickly as I would have othewise, but it has been the one very bright spot this week, making it a much a much nicer place to be. Thanks Linda for sending this out I will miss the people of Three Chimneys very much as I move on to somewhere else when no doubt I pick up another book a little later.

Received last week from heaven-ali and promptly forgot to do a JE. Read the book in record time and it's now on its way to Sheffield. I really enjoyed it and, as with any well-drawn characters, I was sorry to leave them. Agreed with janiemac75 that the ending could have been stronger.

This arrived on Thursday but I was out unfortunately and have only just managed to pick it up from the sorting office. Thank you katisha50 - for the book, choccy and lovely bookmark :-)
I am currently reading a ring book but will get on to this as soon as I finish - it looks interesting.

I apologise, I didn't realise this book had taken me so long. I'm sorry, I just never really got into it. I've started, put it down for a few days, gone back to it, several times. It's hard to say why, but it just doesn't appeal.
Again, I'm sorry for keeping it so long. I'll send it on to cats-eye as soon as I get an address.

I really loved this book! It hooked me in right away, and I thought the characters were beautifully written, the storyline very appealing on many levels, and I felt that the ending suited the pace and style of the book quite well. Thank you for sharing this, LindyB28 - I'm glad I read it :)

I have PM'ed beebarf and will post this out as soon as I have an address.

ETA: posted via 1st class on 3 April.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a tale of small-town America, a genre I love, but with enough depth and satisfaction in it (it lasted TWO commuting days!). The sense of the community as an additional character, a being in its own right, was tangible, and the relationships between friends and generations well and believably drawn. I loved August and the Pastor.

I didn't realise this was to go to Yowlly next - will PM for her address.

This arrived today accompanied by a nice pic of the Birmingham Bull - thanks LyzzyBee!
I am very curious, as it's the second novel I read from this author, the first being "The Dress Lodger", and I wonder if it's going to be as good as that? It is certainly a completely different topic, but I do recommend "The Dress Lodger" to all who like a very good historic novel.

PS: Just noticed LyzzyBee's JE... this second class shipment surely took its time to arrive...must ask next time the postie whether it is being walked all the way from Birmingham...LOL!

7 out of 10

I like books that are long, which means they need to have more than 350 pages. I just can find the time to get used to all the characters, change of location, travelling in time back and forth, and so on. If this book hadn't had its 480+ pages, I would not have read it until the end, despite the fact that I like Sheri Holman's writing so much. You see, it's all about the people... I liked August and commiserated Manda and her husband, felt pity for young Polly, but couldn't stomach either the pastor, or his wife, or Margaret...so full of themselves and selfish to the point of being blinded by their selfishness. I really enjoyed reading this story, however, just like janiemac75 and Katisha50, I found that the ending was a little too abrupt and accommodating... so very much like Hollywood movies, and maybe this was just the effect that the author wanted. A typical story of a small town society in rural America. Nice, but now I am ready for something else :)

As I am the last on the ring, and Linda is currently away from home, I shall keep the book on my bookshelf marked as reserved, waiting to return it to our ringmaster. Thanks again for sharing :)
