David Sedaris just cracks me up! It's usually not the story that gets me but one line or paragraph. This time it was "Buenos Dios, Miguel." It helped that when I read this paragraph to my husband he was still under the influence of pain pills from surgery. He laughed until he cried. "Stop it! It hurts!" just doesn't hold much weight when the person can't stop laughing. :-) Anyway...we've gone around the house randomly saying, loudly, "Buenos Dios!"; and then laughing like we're both on drugs.

Thanks again pjlareau for the good laughs!

Received this today after coming home from my first day at work in my new job -- was a nice thing to find in the post box!
Thanks bethieb, have a few more rings to read before this one but shouldn't take me long - working seems to make me want to spend more time reading!! :)
3rd Jan 2006: Despite wanting to read until my eyeballs dry up it seems this isn't possible... I enjoyed this book but it wasn't all ultra-amusing, although there were some stories that got me snickering out loud, which is always quite an achievement with me. One of which was Naked, a great little tale. This is ready to be sent to Breeze144 once I have her address.

RELEASE NOTES:

Sent to next BCer, should be there beginning of the week :)

Finish this last night! I laughed my way through this entire book, even when I was reading in public and it was totally inappropriate to laugh out loud!

I am a big Sedaris fan and I love his witty dry humour. This book really got me wondering about his fanily though. He talks about them in every book I've read, but this one seems to go into a lot of personal detail. I'd kill my brother if he wrote a book and said things like this about me!

This great book will be on its way eary next week!

I love David Sedaris. I found this book to be both hysterically funny and very poignant. I laughed out loud in several sections.

I will be mailing this off to the next reader on Tuesday. Thank you to bethieb for sharing this wonderful book.

Maybe I just wasn't in a very humourous mood ... although I got a chuckle occasionally I wasn't that wrapped in the style.

Still, it was worth the try!!

Off to the next person as soon as I have the address.

Journal Entry 26 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Thursday, June 21, 2007
Just arrived! I'm looking forward to reading this (but need to get through at least one of the two books I'm reading at the time first). I'll try and get to it within a week or so.

Journal Entry 27 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, July 1, 2007
I have to say, this was not quite what I expected. Mostly, it was a lot less funny than I thought it would be. I agree with previous journalers that Sedaris has a good way with words and that some of his expressions crack you up. But I can't call the book as a whole "hilarious": there's too little witticisms and too much story.
In a way it reminded me of Running with scissors (which is the really horrible story of a young boy growing up in a completely disfunctional family). Sedaris' family is not that disfunctional (or at least, not that obviously so), but you couldn't quite call them normal either.

The real weird thing for me is the implicit racism and discrimation of gays in the book. I'm not quite sure when it's (mostly) set, but I'll happily accept that it's a few decades ago and that things have changed (in some places anyway). But still, it's strange to read about such open making fun of gay people etc.; it's just something that's completely impossible now!

Even if it wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny as I expected it to be (and certainly less so than the one recording of Sedaris I heard; maybe it helps when you hear his voice...), I did enjoy the book. While I won't go out of my way to look for them, I wouldn't mind reading any of his other books.
Thanks for sharing this with me, bethieb! I'll try and find a nice spot to leave this sometime (if only there was a nudists' colony anywhere near...)
