Fannie Flagg is back - together with the unforgettable residents of Elmwood Springs, Missouri - with another cocktail of humour and poignancy, wit and nostalgia, a fantastic feelgood novel that takes you right to the heart of American life. The time: 1946-2000. The Place: Elmwood Springs, Missouri. Right in the middle of everywhere, which could be anywhere. World War II has ended and the joyous transitions to peace are being - mostly - embraced. At the heart of the novel is the inimitable Neighbour Dorothy, broadcasting daily, with Mother Smith on the organ, from her front room, via the tower in her backyard, to an eager, and at times lonely, audience across the state - who often hear more than her own family would like about the antics of wayward son Bobby and adolescent Anna Lee. And meet the Oatman Family, white Southern Gospel Singers at a pharmaceutical convention in Memphis, where they blow the place away; timid, little Betty Raye Oatman who can't stand the life and ends up in a Governor's mansion; Hamm Sparks, a super-salesman everyone likes and trusts, who soon sells all of Missouri; and the phenomena known as the Sunset Club, Dinner on the Ground and the Funeral King.; not to mention the changing face of small-town America. Humour and poignancy, wit and nostalgia, Fannie Flagg mixes the cocktail of small-town American life to perfection.

What a wonderful story, peopled with memorable characters in a small American town between 1946 and 2000. I just loved Neighbour Dorothy broadcasting from her living room across the state, and Betty Raye, Bobby, Norma and Aunt Elner will remain with me for a long time. There were even parts which made me laugh out loud

What a book,so wonderful to catch up with some of the characters of Welcome to the World, Baby Girl ... Fannie Flagg's writing is just stunning, her characters become your friends, their lifes - the ups and downs, all have meaning and relevance.

I loved every page, every word.

Thanks so much Denise xxx

I`m really sorry that I still have the book! Some unexpected appointments kept me away from reading so I will need some extra time to finish it. I`m reading it now and enjoying it,so I think I may be ready in a week.

I enjoyed this book although at some point I had to struggle a bit to finish it but generally it was fine. The book possesses the charm and cozyness of "Fried Green Tomatoes". It was a bit too much "sugared" to my taste- you rarely meet a bad person on the pages, and the conflicts are mild and find soon an easy solution. On the other side, the reader can rest from tragedy and drama while reading this sunny novel. Besides neighbour Dorothy, I liked very much Betty Raye. She makes a really amazing development through the years- from a timid gospel-singer to a state gouvernor. She is honest, loving, and noble. It was interesting to follow the lives of the people in a small town in such a long period of time.

Sending a PM to the next person on the list.

I didn't enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed others of Flagg's books...mainly because there was just too much of it. I enjoyed the story of Betty Raye and Hamm more than any others.

First, let me apologize for holding on to this for so long and say thanks to our gracious host for allowing me the extra time to finish it!

That said, I enjoyed the book. Perhaps not the greatest I've ever read, and not my favorite Flagg novel either, but it was light and refreshing and a welcome retreat. And it was nice revisiting the characters from Flagg's other Neighbor Dorothy novel -- Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! As stated by another reader -- there is little drama or conflict in this one, and that which does exist is easily cured. So very much unlike real life - which was nice.

I will be sending it on to the next reader as soon as I have the address.

Caught!!! I just got home from the hospital after an emergency gallbladder removal and liver infection. This is one of four rings/rays that arrived over the last five days. I am not sure which day it arrived, but I am sure that I will be able to read and get it moving soon. I am sure that once I am feeling a little less tired, I will have tons of time to read. I am off work for a minimum of two weeks!!! Thank you for sharing this book!!!

Such a good book...This is the first Fannie Flagg novel that I have read and now I cannot wait to read her other books. I found this book difficult to put down and I actually read the last three hundred pages of it this evening. The characters feel real and I found myself growing attached to them and getting very caught up in the story.

Thank you to Heaven-Ali for sharing this wonderful story. I will be mailing it out to the next reader on Tuesday.

Like Miss Karen, this was my initiation into the realm of Fannie Flagg..I have to say the book was a bit dry at the start, but then slowly and methodically had me in a stranglehold and couldnt put it down, fried green tomatoes is a film I wasn't going to ever see ( im an elitist wanker) but now I think I will!
cheers to the bonny brummie who started the ring, it will be posted this week to charliewendy in Oz, as lakelady is inactive as it seems..
cheers for turning me onto something I ordinarily would not encompass..

harpy boor crossing..

Journal Entry 21 by charliewendy from Yarra Glen, Victoria Australia on Monday, April 23, 2007
I enjoyed some aspects of this book. The short chapters made it easy to pick up and read in little chunks. This was probably why I was able to finish it. I did consider not finishing it a few times mainly because it was very long with not a lot happening, but maybe I am just not in the target audience. If you grew up in small town America in the 40's, 50's or 60's I'm sure it would be a very powerful trip down memory lane.
I liked some of the characters very much - Dorothy, Minnie, Tot - others like neurotic Norma just gave me the pip. I found the social commentary (eg women's rights movement)interesting but some of the story lines a bit silly.
Maybe just not really my thing, but thank you Heaven-Ali for the chance to read it.
I have sent it on it's way back to the UK, to Storychaser today.

I got half way through this book and just lost the will to live. It just goes on and on; there seemed no end to it and it's so sickly sweet that I couldn't stand it anymore.
Enough said, I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet; they will probably love it, as have most other people on this bookring.
Just waiting for the next person's address and I will get it straight in the post.

Received in the post from Storychaser - many thanks! I asked for this because I enjoyed Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by the same author. So far (I'm still in 1946) this is pretty good as well.

Journal Entry 25 by carocharlton from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, May 19, 2007
I've finished this today. Not as much bite as Fried Green Tomatoes but good nonetheless. Supposed to be a comic novel but it made me cry in spots.

Now reserved for Merimag.
