8 out of 10

We picked this one up in the U.S. and I just finished it a couple of days ago. I am not a comic book fan, but I can imagine how much more riveting this book would be if I had some background with them. The characters are wonderfully complex and fully-fleshed out. The plot takes place in the late 1930s - early 1950s and is, by turns, very funny and very sad. Cliff1976 gets it next.

9 out of 10

I am so glad my wife insisted on buying this book the last time we were bookshopping in the U.S. at Barnes & Noble. I am not quite done reading it (dang it, I have to go to work) but I am confident that this book deserves a 9 or a 10.

Like her, I am not a comic book person either. In fact, I generally tease comic book people pretty viciously. But this is not a comic book. It's an "Amazing"ly rich story that at times has brought me to near-tears and often makes me laugh out loud. Consider the following:

"Jewish superheroes?"
"What, they're all Jewish, superheroes. Superman, you don't think he's Jewish? Coming over from the old country, changing his name like that. Clark Kent, only a Jew would pick a name like that for himself."
I have a strong idea of whom I'd like to offer it to next, and I only hope that he hasn't yet read it and enjoys it as much as we have.
