The third book in The Regeneration Trilogy.

Based on a mix of real and imagined characters and events, this book concentrates on Sarah, a young woman working in a munitions factory, and on Wilfred Owen. The position of women has been a sub-theme throughout the books and here it moves to the forefront.

This book is really interesting and well-written. It really brought home to me the brutality of war and the fact that each one of the people who died was an individual (obvious, I know, but sometimes you need reminding). I would have liked to read a bit more on the people left at home in Britain, particularly the women, as they didn't feature as much as I had hoped, but in the main this is an excellent book and an excellent trilogy – I feel like I’ve learned a lot. Thank you kittiwake.

Eek. Didn't realise I was that disorganised. I got this ages ago and have not registered it. I'm sorry.

On the hunt for book two at the moment. I know it is in a pile somewhere in the house, am just unsure which pile. Will find it next weekend when major tidying commences for decorating.

So, I finally read the book. When I got to it, it only took about twenty-four hours to read.

Was going to post this back to kittiwake today, but there was a problem with the sorting office posting things for some reason.

Prior peered into the small looking-glass behind the wash-basin, checking the knot in his tie. If they didn't send him back he was going to be awfully lonely, marooned among civilians with their glib talk.

As the end of World War I approaches, and while men are still dying in France, the Spanish influenza epidemic is taking hold back home. Rivers spends a lot of time thinking back to his time as an anthropologist in Melanesia. He was studying a tribe on Eddystone Island, who had only recently given up headhunting at the insistence of the colonial powers and whose attitude towards death was very different to the Europeans.

A strong end to a brilliant trilogy.

Another fascinating read, I was glad that in this book I found out a lot more about Rivers. How amazing that he and his sisters had known Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) as a child. The details of Rivers time in a community of headhunters in Melanasia(?) was really fascinating, and not something I would have expected of the third book in the regeneration series.
In addition we meet up again with Billy Prior, and Wilfred Owen. The ending - well inevitable, and sad really.

Reserved for CaterinnaAnna

How much research did Barker do for these?!
Following a link in Wikipaedia to the relevant part of Rivers' work, I was impressed by how credible her theory of the causes of his lack of visual memory became and how the writer of the latter meshed in my head with the voice given him in the novel.
For me this was less a story of the First World War and more one of the development of psychology and the role of reflection, discussion and challenging friends in the growth of ideas: Rivers' advances in psychology would not, selon Barker, have been possible without his time in Melanesia or his relationship with Prior.
This is not to diminish the presence of the war or the sections of the novel set at the front - they remain as powerful and moving as in the first book, even second time around.

Thank you kittiwake.
