The Poisonwood Bible
9 journalers for this copy...
Another one dragged from the depths of my collection, so bear with me as I'm working on vague memories. I recall not being that overwhelmed by the story of Ruth and her family as they started their new life as Baptist missionaries in the Belgium Congo, but I also remember that it stayed with me for quite a while afterwards.
So off it goes to be read by more. Enjoy.

Oh WOW! Thank you so much for this book!!! It must have arrived last week but I've only just found it, while clearing stuff away for Christmas. My cleaner put it in a nice tidy pile with some other post on top of my filing cabinet!!!
I'm going to put it right to the top of my tbr pile, and will take it with me to my sisters tomorrow where I'm hoping for a few quiet moments of pure indulgence.....

I've heard about this and how good it's meant to be lots - though know nothing about it at all! It's a bit of a brick but I'll give it a go. Thanks for sharing.

I found this book at Milton Keynes Library. I found it very interesting and enlightening about postcolonial Africa. Kingsolver's writing is very vibrant and honest. It brings it to life so much that you'll find yourself flinching when reading. Sucked me in, in a way no non-fiction book could have.

The four daughters of a missionary preacher tell the story of their family's move to the Congo: Rachel, obsessed with her own appearance, Leah, quick and unladylike, Adah, crippled and fascinated with words, Ruth May, the baby of the family. As their father's unbending nature refuses to adapt to Africa, inevitably the mission ends in disaster. This is a slow-starter but stick with it, by the end I thought it was amazing, though hearing the magnitude of what the developed world has done to the African continent fills me with horror.
