I love this book! It's both a wonderfully-written and evocative novel about life in a small Southern town of yesteryear and a interesting, complex examination of racism. A modern classic and a must-read for anybody living in America today.

I'm reserving this book for the Banned Books Month Release Challenge.

#41 on the ALA's list of 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000.

Here is The Forbidden Library's entry on To Kill a Mockingbird:
This novel has been challenged quite a lot due to its racial themes. Challenged--and temporarily banned--in Eden Valley, Minn.(1977); Challenged at the Warren, Ind. Township schools (1981), because the book "represents institutionalized racism under the guise of 'good literature'." After unsuccessfully banning the novel, three black parents resigned from the township human relations advisory council. Banned from the Lindale, Tex. advanced placement English reading list (1996) because the book "conflicted with the values of the community."

I honestly don't understand that at all. How can a book about the evils of racism be considered racist? It's utterly senseless.

Here's what the Banned Books Project had to say:
Considered "dangerous" because of profanity and undermining of race relations. Challenged (temporaily banned) in Eden Valley, Minnesota, 1977; Vernon-Verona-Sherill, New York, School District, 1980; Warren, Indiana, township schools, 1981; Waukegan, Illinois, School District, 1984; Kansas City, Missouri, junior high schools, 1985; Park Hill (Missouri) Junior High School, 1985. Protested by black parents and NAACP in Casa Grande (Arizona) Elementary School District, 1985.
