Bought to read on my vacation in Asia.

Finished this book in one day while traveling. I had very high expectations of David Sedaris from all the reviews I'd read so I was a little let down. But the writing was fairly entertaining. My two particular favorites were "Jesus Shaves" and "Smart Guy"- these were the ones I found myself laughing insanely over at the airport!

The book arrived yesterday. I've got one book in front of this one, but I'm a quick reader, so I expect to start this one by the end of the week. Looking foward to it!

To me, David Sedaris seems like a pretty unlikeable fellow. He seems a little too cocky, and a bit ego centric. He goes to a foreign country, only to watch American movies in the theatre, which is probably the antithesis of what I stand for!

And yet, he writes with such charm and wit that I couldn't help but find myself liking him as a protagonist.

I loved his description of life in NYC, and even though I didn't always want to, I often found myself if not agreeing with him, at least smiling in understanding of his experience.

All in all, a wonderful collection of essays to introduce me to David Sedaris. Now I need to decide should I persue his material further, or stop here? As I mentioned, I found him to be an often times unlikeable fellow, and many times what got me through a section was his description of other countries or NYC (two of my favorite topics). I'm not sure what the rest of his writing is like.

This isn't what I had expected. I didn't know the book was made up of short essays. The author talks about his family, various jobs and relationships. There were parts that made me laugh out loud, he's done some outlandish things! Entertaining but not something I would normally read.

This will be posted tomorrow and on it's way across the Atlantic to BestFriends in France. (going surface mail)

This book never arrived in France so I've received a replacement copy to restart the bookring. Hopefully it will resurface one day!

Journal Entry 10 by lostbookisland on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

This book has not been rated.

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
