#18 on the ALA's list of The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000.

#29 on the list of Most Frequently Banned Books of the 1990s.

Here is The Forbidden Library's entry on The Color Purple:
Challenged as appropriate reading material for an Oakland, Calif. High School honors class (1984) due to the work's "sexual and social explicitness" and its "troubling ideas about race relations, man's relationship to God, African history, and human sexuality." This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was finally approved for use by the Oakland Board of Education after nine months of debate. Banned in the Souderton, Pa. Area School District (1992) as appropriate reading for tenth graders because it is "smut." Removed from the Jackson County, W.Va. school libraries (1997) along with sixteen other titles.

Wonderful book! Highly recommended!

Book description taken from Amazon.com:

Celie is a poor black woman whose letters tell the story of 20 years of her life, beginning at age 14 when she is being abused and raped by her father and attempting to protect her sister from the same fate, and continuing over the course of her marriage to "Mister," a brutal man who terrorizes her. Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister's letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self.
