Reserved for the Banned Books Month Challenge. #59 on the ALA's list of The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000. According to the Banned Books Project, Ordinary People was banned in 1982 by a high school in Merrimack, NH because it was "obscene" and "depressing." It has also been challenged because of sexual themes, obscene language, and references to suicide. From the Back Cover: The Jarrets are a typical American family. Calvin is a determined, successful provider and Beth and organized, efficient wife. They had two sons, Conrad and Buck, but now they have one. In this memorable, moving novel, Judith Guest takes the reader into their lives to share their misunderstandings, pain...and ultimate healing. |
