This is one of my all-time childhood favorites! I remember being totally absorbed in this story, reading it under the covers because I wanted to know what happened next -- even when I had read it before! Compelling and strange (in a good way). Great read.

From the back cover:

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and their mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."

A tesseract (in case you don't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would spoil you enjoyment of Madeleine L'Engle's unusual book.

Reserved for the Banned Books Month Challenge.

#22 on the ALA's list of The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000.

#12 on the list of Most Freqently Banned Books of the 1990s.

Here's Forbidden Library's entry on the subject:
Challenged at the Polk City, Fla. Elementary School (1985) by a parent who believed that the story promotes witchcraft, crystal balls, and demons. Challenged in the Anniston Ala. schools (1990). The complainant objected to the book's listing the name of Jesus Christ together with the names of great artists, philosophers, scientists, and religious leaders when referring to those who defend earth against evil. Got it. Let's cross Jesus off that list, shall we?
