This is one of those novels that pulls together into one book all the different genres of reading I enjoy. By telling the story through different character's eyes, the author of Corelli's Mandolin creates a real sense of "being there" on an obscure Greek island during the Italian/German occupation in WWII.
It is historically and geographically accurate, as is the beautifully told love story between the occupying Italian Captain Corelli and the daughter of the local physician. There is more to the book than romance; read this book to get a feel for the hundreds of years of shared (but not necessarily peaceful) history and politics between the Greeks, Italians, French, and Germans....
