>>>Seven Australian soldiers, carousing in Paris in 1918, unknowingly witness a murder and their presence has devastating consequences. Ten years later, two are dead ... under very suspicious circumstances.
Phryne's wharfie mates, Bert and Cec, appeal to her for help. They were part of this group of soldiers in 1918 and they fear for their lives and for those of the other three men. It is only as Phryne delves into the investigation that she, too, remembers being in Montparnasse on that very same day.
While Phryne is occupied with memories of Montparnasse past and the race to outpace the murderer, she finds troubles of a different kind at home. Her lover, Lin Chung, is about to be married. And the effect this is having on her own usually peaceful household is disastrous.<<<

I think that this is the best of the Phryne Fisher books; it is more about Phryne and her past.
I'm surprised that, of all the Phryne books, this was the only one which was not readily available in the bookshops. I had to order it in!

When I have read this book I will send it out on a bookring journey around Australia.

Received in the mail today - yet another Phryne Fisher book! Looks good, I'm keen to read "the best one"! Have a few others on the pile first, but hopefully shouldn't be too long. Thank pinkozcat!
Apologies for holding up this bookring!
I eventually got to this book and quite enjoyed it. I'm not sure if I think it's the best Phryne book - I couldn't stop reading it after about the first half, but before then I didn't really get into it. I found the flashbacks a tad annoying initially, but towards the end it was great to have a picture of Phryne's younger years.
Thanks for the bookring pinkozcat, I'll send this onto Littlemave ASAP.

Gosh this was a thicker-than-usual Phryne mystery. There were so many different stories woven into it that sometimes I wondered if I was still thinking of the same book!
The author is very clever to incorporate so many historical facts, people and places and she must have done a fair bit of research on 1918 post-war Paris. Oh, I suppose that's just what a good author does!
Again with any Phyrne book read out of sequence, it is nice to know how various pivotal moments happened - this time being how the arrangement with Lin Chung and Camillia came to pass. (And how the garden came to be designed.)
So, after solving a kidnapping case, a murder case and dealing with the resignation of the Butlers, along with so many bad memories (and good ones too) of wartime France, it was just business as usual at 221B The Esplanade, St Kilda...
Off to tantan tomorrow along with Murder on the Ballarat Train. Thanks pinkozcat for the loan.

Received with thanks from Littlemave! There's a few in front of it, but hopefully I'll get to this soon.
My local library has a copy of this one so I'll be posting it off to sally906 along with Murder on the Ballarat Train and The Castlemaine Murders sometime this week.
Arrived in today's mail - with two other Phryne mysteries - will get them all out as soon as I can :)
Couldn't helpmyself - started reading it last night and it had to finished today - even though I have other bookring books ahead of it.
Will not mail it off to astro2480 yet as she has requested the three to be sent together.

Yet another excellent Phryne read. Thanks again pinkozcat for making it available.
Off to viola7. ENJOY!

Received from astro2480 today. I think that I'll like it better than the last one - I like Paris better than circuses!
Thank you very much for the beautiful bookmark as well. I love your art!

I really enjoyed this one! I liked part of the story being set in Paris, and it was interesting to find out about Phyrne's time as an ambulance officer in the First World War, and her first love.
The only problem with this book were the marital arrangements of Phyrne's lover, Lin Chung. Phyrne and the mistress are very accepting of each other which was a little unbelievable, but, in a way, it's better than the wife not knowing and everything being secret!

Arrived on Friday, sorry for the late journal, my housemate got to it first and she is already halfway through.
This was really good, nice to fill in on the background and she is in good form otherwise. What a relief that things got sorted with Mr Butler ;)
All packed up to be mailed today, going home finally. Thanks Pinkozcat!

This book made it's way to my mum, probably through the hospital, but she unfortunately passed away a few years ago. It has been sitting on the shelf with her books so apologies for that. Now that I know what to do with it, I will send it out on another journey to be enjoyed once again.
