From the back cover:
Strong, sassy women and hard-luck, hardheaded men, all searching for the middle ground between Native American tradition and the modern world, perform an elaborate dance of approach and avoidance in this magical, rollicking tale by Cherokee author Thomas King. Alberta is a university professor who would like to trade her two boyfriends for a baby but no husband; Lionel is forty and still sells televisions for a patronizing boss; Eli and his log cabin stand in the way of a profitable dam project. These three - and others - are coming to the Blackfoot reservation for the Sun Dance and there they will encounter four Indian elders and their companion, the trickster Coyote - and nothing in the small town of Blossom will be the same again...

This doesn't even begin to describe the beauty, imagination and intricacy of this novel. It won the Governor General's Award for Fiction and has appeared in Quill & Quire's list of 40 great works of Canadian fiction. This will be my first bookring, so I hope everyone enjoys it. PM me to join.

I just got it and am beginning to read it for Brookeworm's book ring. will update with my thoughts.

Journal Entry 5 by oneflewtoofar from Mississauga, Ontario Canada on Thursday, February 9, 2006
I'm the worst bookring member ever....I am finally done this really great book but it did take forever.

I had trouble getting 'in' to this book mainly because of the style. Once I got a hand at it I found it to be truly enjoyable. It feels like a cottage book though, definately one for the dockside.

Will be on it's way to brewster13 tomorrow.

This book arrived in the mail last week. I will get to it as soon as I can, with the promise to send it on if I am not able to get it read in a reasonable amount of time.
Thanks for sharing ... Brewster

Journal Entry 7 by brewster13 from Calgary, Alberta Canada on Sunday, April 16, 2006
My apologies for having had this book this long. We had our baby boy on March 7 - and as to be expected I haven't had much time to get to finishing this book! My reading time has been focused on other types of reading, when I actually get a minute or two with my eyes open! So I will be sending this on, half-read, this upcoming week. If there's a chance to move me to the bottom of the ring, I would appreciate getting the opportunity to read it again in the future.
Thanks ... and again my apologies for having this so long.

Arrived in the mail today. The rings have conspired to meet up at my house, so I have one to read ahead of this one.

Journal Entry 9 by MysteryMish from Santa Monica , California USA on Monday, May 22, 2006
I liked this book, but it was difficult to follow. It was frustrating for me, especially in the first half. I felt like I was trying to read a good story inside a popcorn popper. I felt that bits and pieces were flying by in no discernable order. It took a while to get the characters and their relationships down, and this hurt my connection to the book early on. It could have been a much better book if it was easier to follow. Thanks for sharing!

I'll mail this off as soon as I have the address for the next person.

Edit: 2nd pm sent to psyche 5/23
Edit: 5/27 - thanks to Brookeworm for pointing out that I had pm'd psyche, not -psyche- (with dashes in front and back). I've pm'd the correct person and will send book along.
Edit: mailed book 6/1

Journal Entry 12 by themarina from Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada on Tuesday, August 22, 2006
Came today! It's the next on the list to be read! I'll get to it in the next week! :)

Journal Entry 13 by themarina from Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, August 30, 2006
Well, I'm not going to give this a rating because I couldn't manage to get through it. Actually, I had a difficult time getting into it at all. In the 8 days I've been trying to read it, I've started it twice and still can't get past page 50. I just don't think it's meant to be, at least not at the moment at least. May give another shot down the road.

Thanks to Brookeworm for starting this ring! :)

I've contacted arturogrande and this will be going out before the end of the week!

Journal Entry 14 by themarina from Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, September 7, 2006
This is now makin its way accross the water to arturogrande! Enjoy!

Journal Entry 15 by arturogrande from Coalville, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Monday, September 11, 2006
Thanks very much - I've got another ring book ahead of it, but I'll try to get to it as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 16 by arturogrande from Coalville, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Sunday, September 24, 2006
Like oneflewtoofar, I too had trouble getting into this at first, simply because the narrative flow, combining native American and Western traditions, was different from what I'm used to. But once I got into it, I'm glad I persevered, because I found it delightful.
These characters felt like real people, living real lives and dealing with real issues (bizarrely, given the way Native American legend is woven throughout and characters like Coyote regularly pop up.)
It's an unusual way of telling a story, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks, Brookeworm, for sharing.
It's now on its way to storychaser.

Journal Entry 17 by StoryChaser from Waterlooville, Hampshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 27, 2006
Arrived safe & sound. Thanks, I will start this one as soon as I finish my current book.

Journal Entry 18 by StoryChaser from Waterlooville, Hampshire United Kingdom on Sunday, October 1, 2006
Sorry folks, just can't get into this one at all. I have no idea what it's going on about, so I am giving in (life's too short...).

Off to gaelpixie tomorrow.

Journal Entry 19 by gaelpixie from Leeds, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 9, 2006
Received safely, with a delicious sachet of hot chocolate drink. Thank you StoryChaser. Will read it next.

Journal Entry 20 by gaelpixie from Leeds, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 16, 2006
Fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the magic of Coyote stories, and this one was no exception. King's novel is funny and spiritual, a fine yarn, and probably includes some of the best written women (in a novel by a man) that I have come across in a long time. He has woven Native American creation myths into modern politics and environmentalism, highlighting the way that white society continues to sideline Native peoples, but at the same time providing a positive message that we can continue to create and recreate the reality that we need.

I want to read lots more Thomas King. Brilliant - thank you Brookeworm for sharing this.

Will PM Libahunt and get this sent on.
