I read another BC copy of this book, and wrote:
"In agreement with previous readers, I think the second section resonates more than the first. I probably would prefer my Sedaris is small doses: a story at a time, rather than a whole book at once. Taken singularly, the stories are sharp, funny, and observant. As a whole, though, the relentless sarcastic tone begins to grate a bit."

I saw this copy at a used book sale, and picked it up to share.

After it's long journey, this book arrived in my postbox here in Wellington, New Zealand yesterday morning. Thanks very much for sending it, kristamd. I look forward to reading it soon!

Perhaps I've read too much Sedaris now, because the sarcastic tone started to grate on me a bit too. However, there were parts where I laughed out loud as I was reading.

I particularly enjoyed "Deux*" which deals with Sedaris' time in France, and his attempts to learn the language. It does make me worry, however, that while I'm in Paris later this year, I'm going to be classified as a speaker of "Easy French" (see page 187).

Thanks again for sending this to me,kristamd. Sorry it's taken me so long to get around to reading it. I'll try to find it a new home as soon as I can!

Journal Entry 7 by wingEdwardstreetwing from Lower Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Wednesday, July 12, 2006
Picked this up Tuesday night and have read it every spare moment since, including far too late in the night. I was immediatly engaged by the writimg and humour. A totally new writer to me, off to the library to find some other work of his.
Will pass on to a friend who I am trying to encourage to join bookcrossing. However if anyone has this on their list of want to read let me know.

Picked up at the October Wellington Bookcrossing meeting at Blend, Wakefield Street.

I'm new to Sedaris, but he comes highly recommended.

The five pages of blurbs were a bit of overkill, I thought, but the book lived up to the promises made. I'd laugh, then start to suspect that Sedaris is a tosser. Then he would say something so delightfully self-deprecating that all would be forgiven and I'd laugh again.

Sending to alkaline_kiwi.

Another author that I have heard so much about from BookCrossing. And past recommendations that I've taken from BookCrossing have been enjoyed by me so am looking forward to this one too.

Well I'll definately be checking out more David Sedaris books now, I really enjoyed this one.

Some stories I laughed out loud at (I read most of the book at work so good thing there wasn't any customers around who might of thought I was crazy for suddenly bursting out laughing).

I'd previously read the 'Jesus Shaves' story in a book of funny travel stories but enjoyed the re-read of it (which some lines I read out loud to my workmates).

Will take this one along to the next Greymouth meetup and see if anyone else from the group wants to read it.

The first four or five chapters of this book were kind of okay, and then suddenly it got really funny. So I had to keep the book a bit longer because I had to read parts to my partner. Given that others have said that Sedaris tends to get a bit much after a while, I'm not sure whether I want to read more of his or not (oh but I really do!).
I loved the whole section on living in France, the language school, his struggles with being a man trapped in a child's language ability, etc. Loved picturing him having little romances between the celery and the tomato, between the pen and the paperclip, to try and remember the gender of words.
And I would so love to hear more about (or from) his sister Amy - she sounds amazing (if a little scary).
Posted today to KiwiinEngland, enjoy!

A collection of short stories, that would have worked well as a weekly newspaper section. Some of the stories didn't work for me (perhaps the humour didn't travel well). I also enjoyed the french section (particularly Jesus saves, and the teachers feedback to her students).

The interaction with his father was amusing too. And I agree with Veganmedusa...Amy does sound an interesting person. I note that Amy and David read his book Naked on the audiocassette's, so maybe she is mentioned more in them (or maybe David just needed a woman's voice more for that book.

It's arrived! Thanks very much KiwiinEngland for sending me this book. It's nice to receive a book that's been around the world once already! I'll send you my end of the trade as soon as I can.

Once I got into this, I really started to enjoy it. As I have in the past humiliated myself on a regular basis by attempting foreign languages, I could particularly relate to the bits about learning French. I also once had a French teacher who was almost, but not quite, as cruel and arrogant as the one he describes.

I might take this to my first meetup next week. Woo-hoo!
