Journal Entry 1 by Wassir from Portland, Oregon USA on Sunday, August 14, 2005
My MFA advisor, the great and talented Abby Frucht, recommended this book as a lesson on getting into the psyche of a deeply flawed protagonist. The movie is good, but the novel is great. Dark, dysfunctional, terrible and captivating.

I never did see the movie. The book does have alot of bad words..but nothing I can't handle. But it would be good to read part of the story instead of having every fourth word cussing. The story starts out with wade having his daughter over for the weekend. He doesn't seem to be a good father the way he acts toward her she doesn't feel good being there so she calls her mother to come and get her. Of course he gets mad at her and starts to cuss her out. Not only is he a father but he is also a well digger and believe it or not a police officer. This book is going to ARIUEA

Russell Banks is so gifted for writing this kind of middle-aged men sad stories that even when everything seems to be straighten out, you can feel his subtle way of preparing you for the worst. It remainded me of In cold blood. Not for all moods, specially afflicted ones. It will be in its way to LeishaCamden this week.

OMG ... !! I just discovered the package with this book in it (along with two other packages ... !!) on a chair in my living room, in a pile of mail that must have arrived during the week of August 19th-27th. :-o I'm so sorry for not journalling this book sooner! I only realized it was here like five minutes ago. I was out of town that week and my friends who came over to feed my turtles didn't mention that there had been any mail - I never stopped to ask if there had been any or to think what they would have done with it if there had. Obviously they put it in a pile on a chair ... ! :-D There were some newspapers on top of it, so I guess I've just been wandering around here for two weeks thinking that I must have put that stuff there myself. I'm sorry ... !! Better late than never?? Thank you, ariuca! Sorry for being such a scatterbrain. :-) Am red in the face now, I can tell you. But I'm also very grateful for the book. :-) I have seen the movie and thought it was excellent; the book is probably even better. Thank you!
