Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole
14 journalers for this copy...
This is a very interesting account of how a woman became the only doctor at the US South Pole research station for a year, and what happened after she discovered a lump in her breast. Really a fascinating story.
Received Ice Bound today by "snail mail" from another BCer in South Carolina. Looking forward to reading it.
Thanks kiptrix!!
Thanks kiptrix!!
Thanks to kiptrix for mailing me this phenominal book! This was an absolutely brave, honest, fun, thought provoking book. I couldn't put this one down. It made me think how well or not well I would have coped in this woman's circumstances. To face the possibility of death in a remote, dark, unfamiliar, cold place on earth made me thankful for all we have and where we live.
Snail mailing this to Miss-Efficiency in Milton, Ontario on Monday, October 28th/02.
Thanks again kiptrix and to you

Received this in the mail from JuneBug31. I'm sending her The House of Sand and Fog in exchange.
I'm so glad I saw this on the Caught list the other day and summoned the nerve to request it from JuneBug31 when she was done with it. I do a fair amount of public speaking about my own expedition to Antarctica. Virtually everywhere I go, someone nearly always brings up Jerri Nielsen. It will be great to finally hear her story told in her own words.

This is a wonderful book. She did an excellent job of describing life on the ice. She manages to tell of her experience with cancer in a very heartfelt way, without falling into the victim mentality trap. I really admire her very much and would love an opportunity to get in touch with her one day. I think this book would appeal to anyone, not just those like me who are "of the ice". I plan to circulate this book widely among my friends and family. It is now in the hands of CanJane.
I saw Jerri Nielsen interviewed a few months back and was fascinated by her story. My coworker has been to Antarctica and was reading this book. She passed it on to me... and I have been devouring it! It is so well written, so difficult to put down. I really have resented my lunch hours and my subway rides, for not being longer. I will be returning the book to my coworker in the morning as her husband wants to read it. May it go around the world and be shared by more people.

I've heard rave reviews about this from my wife and her friend. I will read it eventually.
Haven't had a chance to read this yet. I've passed it on to my mother-in-law for her to read in the meantime.
I was captivated by Jerri's strength under the circumstances. It would be scary at any time to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer but when she was the only medical person in such an isolated place it must have been devastating! The support and medical assistance she got from her friends at the pole was amazing and, I suspect, the reason she was able to get through the ordeal.
I was concerned that when the person had a seizure it was treated as such an acute medical emergency and he was abruptly shipped out. It reinforces the fear that many people have of being around someone with a seizure disorder. In most cases, the seizure is self- limiting and, after a brief period of confusion, the person returns to normal activity. He had undergone a change of medication which likely caused the breakthrough seizure therefore an increase in medication would have been in order. I suppose the future possibility of status epilepticus was the reason he was sent away but I felt the whole situation was handled with an aura of drama that shouldn't have happened.
I feel so sorry for her that her children were alienated by the evil man she married. I hope that when they read the book they will realize what he has done to them and to Jerri and reunite with her.
I got the book from my daughter and have already passed it on to a friend who promises to report her impressions at bookcrossings.

I've never been very interested in reading books about real people and real life situations, but this book I found very interesting and thought provoking. I had heard about this doctors dilema but it never touched me the way it has now. I thank my friend Nelle for intoducing me to this book and will return it back to her, to pass on to her daughter.
This one's back in the Miss-Efficiency/theLorax household after its tour of the Greater Thornton Area. Apparently Lucious passed it on to another friend who read this one, but hasn't journalled it yet.
If theLorax doesn't dig into it soon, I'm thinking I might send it out in a bookring and he can read it when it returns.

I've organized a bookring for this one. I hope everyone enjoys this. Incidentally, the TV movie of this with Susan Sarandon was filmed very close to where I grew up and where this book has been travelling recently. Figures, I go all the way to Antarctica for a change of scenery (among other things) and then when they need to film Antarctic scenery, they go to my home town!
Anyway here's the final travelling list:

muzette - Quebec
leanne345 - UK
greedyreader- New Jersey
mom-of-one - Pennsylvania
grover3d - West Virginia

ACKKKKKKKKKKK - I have four bookring books to read !!!! Its ok..I can do it..I think I can I think I can.... :) Thanks for sending this Miss-Efficiency - I'll journal again when I've read it.
Just starting this tonight. I promise to have it moving early next week. Thanks again Miss-Efficiency.
I'm about 1/3 the way thru this and enjoying it very much. Her narrative is very descriptive but not overwhelming nor tedious to read.
I like the way she flows from one paragraph to another, each one a new piece of the story.
The reprints of her emails home show her feelings and her fears, even when the words don't.
I'll journal again!!!

Incredible story. I could not put it down at all last night and this afternoon once I picked it up. The suspense (even though I knew the outcome from all the media) was intense. Jerri's courage and spirit really are an inspiration not only to those with cancer, but to anyone facing adversity. Her friends, "the Polies", are an example of what good people do when friends need them. I'd love to look up her life in a few years and see who she is still in touch with, what she's done and if her children ever came to their senses!
(I'll be sending this to muzette on Monday.)

From the book: “You came here to conquer one dragon, only to confront others you didn’t know were on your tail.”
I just finished the book. I loved it although I did find the writing a bit "cold" and impersonal. Nonetheless, it was very interesting to ‘observe’ daily life in Antarctica and especially the ingenuity of the people living there to keep their spirits up. The account clearly shows the strength and yet also the vulnerability of Dr. Nielsen. Never do we feel that she is a ‘super women’ overly optimistic. We see her as a human being going through a scary experience..., and yet so amazing.
Facing ones mortality must be incredibly hard…, and yet we will all have to face it at some point.

Just finished - what a really moving and unbelievably good book - i couldnt put it down. I will pass it on to the next person now.
Well, well, well ... I guess I better get cracking! I seem to finish one book just to have another one show up on the 'ole doorstep. I am going away next weekend -- and what better place to read about the South Pole than Cancun. And what better person than butterfly1203 who, like me, is a breast cancer advocate -- and we've walked two 60 mile fundraisers (Bear Mtn to Manhattan one year, San Jose to San Francisco the next)together. I see us drinking a toast to Jerri Nielsen, as well as all survivors, Some frozen drink, I think.
As for the story: I saw the PBS piece on Dr Nielsen and can't believe what a strong woman she is. I look forward to reading this and passing it along. Thank you all!

I love this story of guts and determination! What a modern-day hero. Anyway, I have just sent my 2nd PM to mom-of-one. Hopefully she'll respond so I can mail this book out to her. (Would be nice if it wasn't part of the centerpiece on my Christmas dinner table ;^)
OK ... so after sending repeat PMs to mom-of-one (no response!) and a "get well & are you up for this book?" post to grover3D (she politley said to skip her), I am going to be sending this rampallion after she sends her address. Wish me and the book luck.
January 7th -- sending to rampallion

Arrived today. I'm eager to read this, especially after seeing what high ratings the previous journalers gave it. Thanks to all who passed it on!
Oh, this one made me cry. Jerri Nielsen is unflinchingly honest. I loved all the details, especially the e-mails. Hope she is cancer-free and reconciled with her children. And I also hope that a doctor AND a nurse are now assigned to the winterover team.
I've already emailed 16stepper to see if she is ready for this one. I hope to mail it in the next week.
Thanks, all, for sharing this terrific book.

Ice Bound has arrived in Gilbert. Adding to my stack of rays, which has been proliferating since I broke my reading glasses. I'm using glasses from 2 years ago, but it sure has slowed me down! New glasses due on Tuesday, God willing!
I'm sorry for how long I've had this, but I think it was meant to be. This surfaced at the top of my TBR pile on my 4th anniversary of surviving cancer. I don't think that was a mistake.
This is a wonderful book, full of details about what it is like to live at the south pole, even more than what it is like to be diagnosed with cancer. This was a surprise to me. I expected it to be more focused on the cancer aspect, but now that I've completed it, I think it was written just exactly correctly. What a wonderful tribute to the courage of the human spirit - not just in the tale of Dr. Nielson, but in the stories of her fellow Polies.
I will contact ladytonia for her mailing addy and get it out to her.

This is back with me. More specifically, it's on the summit of theLorax's Mt. TBR. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for him to get round to it so we can keep it moving.
This has been sitting on my husband's bedside table for years. It has been used as a surface upon which to rest the crossword puzzle many times, but I have finally given up on him getting around to reading it. I am including it in a shoebox of books that I am sending to the BookCrossing Convention in Charleston, S.C. so that I can continue its journey.
Ironically, it is going back where it started from.
Ironically, it is going back where it started from.
Amazing--my book has come home for a visit! It has traveled far and wide since I first mailed it to Canada in October, 2002! I hope it will begin a new journey very soon. Thanks for including this in your package, Miss-Efficiency, sorry it missed the convention.
Sending this to ResQgeek's aunt, with the hope that she enjoys the book and perhaps will enjoy BookCrossing as well.
Thanks to bookcrossing members, especially out nephew and his friends for helping me fulfill a book club chain letter from my daughter-in-law's mother. I have never read this book though I remember this incident. Should be a good non-fiction read. We travel out West, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona so will leave this selection somewhere in my travels over the next three months. Again, thanks for sharing a well traveled book
