Found a 2nd copy on my bookshelf, so this can go free - haven't read either copy yet, but this is the summary from Amazon:

Rennie Wilford, a young journalist running for her life, takes an assignment on a Caribbean island and tumbles into a world where people are not what they seem. When a burnt-out Yankee offers Rennie a no-hooks, no-strings affair, she is caught up in a lethal web of corruption.

This is turning into a ray:

What I like about Atwood is that no two books are the same (well, from the ones I've read so far anyway) but, to be honest, I found this one fairly average. Taken as the story of Rennie recovering from cancer and a failed love affair, it was an interesting read but the back cover suggested a thriller which didn't really fit.

Off to Teachie this morning. Thanks psychjo.

Bodily Harm arrived this morning, together with Sophie's World. As I opened that one first and it's a thicker book I shall start with that one. Can't wait to read this though, I always enjoy her books.

Margret Atwood's style is totally different in each book and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed all those I have read. However I found this one a disappointment. I was waiting for something to happen, but it didn't. A bit of a damp squib really. Posted off to Martinburo 16.9.05.

Thanks. I will read this when I have finished Middlemarch.

Sorry that I've had it for almost two months.
I think I may have read this book a long time ago. I didn't notice at first, but the last ten pages gave me this odd feeling of deja lu. I liked the book. It makes two major changes of direction in the plot, that crept up on me, possibly because I was not paying attention too closely, as the book started out as a "normal" novel, something I would expect Margaret Atwood of writing. Then it slowly turns into a spy novel. I don't like spy novels, but this part never stepped over my boundary of televisionesqueness, and then the last ten pages have a high postmodernist content, you never know which of two alternate endings is the real one. They are a masterful blend of darkness and release. Just what I needed, though not quite enough of it.

I have asked Lady-Mondegreen for an address.

Arrived yesterday - thanks martinburo (and psychjo). I look forward to reading it and then will see who else may want to read it as I see I am the last on the ray at this time.
