from the dust jacket:

A tour-de-force of history and imagination, The Lady and the Unicorn is Tracy Chevalier's answer to the mystery behind one of the art world's great masterpieces.

A set of bewildering medieval tapestries hangs today in a protected chamber in Paris. They appear to portray a woman's seduction of a unicorn, but the story behind their making is unknown -- until now.

Paris, 1490. A shrewd French nobleman commissions six lavish tapestries celebrating his rising status at Court. He hires the charismatic, arrogant, sublimely talented Nicolas des Innocents to design them. Nicolas creates havoc among the women in the house -- mother and daughter, servant and lady-in-waiting -- before taking his designs north to the Brussels workshop where the tapestries are to be woven.

There, master-weaver Georges de la Chapelle risks everything he has on finishing the tapestries -- his finest, most intricate work -- on time for his exacting French client. Ill-prepared for the temptation and seduction, he and his family are consumed by the project and their dealings with the full-blooded painter from Paris.

The results change all their lives -- lives that have been captured in the tapestries, for those who know where to look.

In The Lady and the Unicorn, Tracy Chevalier weaves fact and fiction into a beautiful, timeless, and intriguing literary tapestry -- an extraordinary story exquisitely told.

7 out of 10

I finished this book on Thursday. It took some time to get into, but by about 2/3 of the way through, I was reading very quickly! I loved the history in it, and learning about how weaving was done. It was interesting to think that something like this could have happened. It caught me a little off gaurd, the way that different voices were used throughout the book, but I think that only helped tell the story of the tapestry. The epilog was my favorite part, as what I had been hoping throughout the book seems to have come true.

8 out of 10

Arrived safely in today's mail. I'm finishing another book, but hope to have this one started by the weekend. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in the ring...I'm looking forward to reading it!

I enjoyed this one SO much more than Girl with One Pearl Earring. The characters were well written, and the storyline was interwoven nicely w/ the historical aspects of the book.

The book is here & I've already finished it. Took me a little longer to read than I had planned, it seems like everytime I picked this book up I was interrupted by someone or something. I posted when it originally arrived but I don't see the journal entry and I'm not sure what happened to it.

Excellent book! So far I have enjoyed everything I've read by Tracy Chevalier.

Next up...GABAGirl.

8 out of 10

I read through the first part of this book and realized that I had somehow made it onto two book rings for this book and had read it already. However: I like it so much that I finished it. I picked up several things that I didn't realize the first time. I really like this story, especially the not-so-side story of the weaver and his family. I do wish the epilogue was nonexistent, though.

In the mail today to ToXiCKiTTiKiSS. Thanks to dospescados for including me in this ring!!

I sent this to Canada quite a while ago, and now all of sudden it came back to me. They attempted to deliver it a couple times unsuccessfully. I sent it to princess1984, and it cost quite a bit too. So I'm not sure who to send it to next. So dospescados, if you want to pm me your preference of what you want me to do ... that would be great.
