Charles Judd meanders round his local Cornish beach, contemplating the turns his life has taken. At home, his wife Daphne struggles hopelessly with the latest fish recipe. Two of their children are keeping it together - just. The third, Charles and Daphne's prodigal daughter Juliet, is being released from prison in New York after a sentence for art theft. This is the day, on the face of it so ordinary, on which Justin Cartwright's explosive novel opens, as all five members of the family try to come to terms with the return of Juliet, and their deepest thoughts and darkest secrets are laid bare.
I really don't know how this book received such fantastic reviews,I didn't enjoy it at all and struggled to finish.

Taken from the bookbox. I read Cartwright's Leading The Cheers a few years ago and quite liked it.

This was an OK book, a nice exploration of family ties and everyone's search and need for happiness. But I wouldn't use the word explosive for it, it's a gentle read, tracing a couple of weeks in the Judd family following Juliet's release from prison.

Thank you so much - what a lovely surprise! I will read this as soon as time allows!
I quite enjoyed this, although agree that it doesn't quite meet the praise heaped on it. An interesting exploration of family life.
Heading off to Katisha50 from a swap.

Thanks, camis, received yesterday. May not get to it very quickly, given the comments above!
As predicted, didn't get to it. I think it's time for it to find someone else to live with for a while.
