My husband thoroughly enjoyed another book by Richard Dawkins recently, and thinks we'd both enjoy this. So we're taking it on a trip and we'll leave it along the way after we've both read it. (Since we're travelling to the Galapagos Islands, a book on evolution seems particularly apropos.)

I just finished this book today. Obviously, I didn't get to it on our trip last summer. But that worked out well because I will be counting it as a book by a British author in my attempt to read books by authors from all 202 countries that participate in the Olympics. I enjoyed this book, although not quite as much as I enjoyed The Selfish Gene, also by Dawkins. I found it a little repetitive to that one - explaining some of the same concepts and mechanisms. Also, perhaps because I feel no inclination to believe in "Intelligent Design", I am not that interested in reading long arguments against it. But instead of focussing on the minor negatives, let me hasten to say that I find that Dawkins presents complex ideas in a very readable and enjoyable way. He finds great analogies and examples, and is careful to explain where their limits are. I particularly enjoyed his description of the "inorganic mineral" theory of the origin of life, which was new to me.

Just a note to say that I'm giving this book to an acquaintance, as it came up in conversation a few weeks ago and he seemed somewhat interested.
