A really interesting novel set in the small cities, towns and back woods of Vancouver Island. The title refers to the village of Sointula, an isolated village on Malcolm Island in British Columbia, Canada where the protagonist's son has been living on the beach, making a subsistence living watching and photographing a pod of orcas. I enjoyed this book a lot, although I suspect its resonance was enhanced for me by my familiarity with the geography and culture of the area.
