I've been down on Hamilton for a while, especially in the Anita Blake series and although I'd bought every book since the first for that series, I completely stopped buying them or even reading them. Soon after I started reading this book I realized that I'd already sort of read it a few years ago. I say sort of because a friend of mine knew I liked Hamilton and he emailed me an electronic copy that I don't know where he got. I don't remember when it was exactly, but I think I remember that the book was actually not officially out yet... So anyway, I was happy to read it then for free since I was so annoyed with Hamilton and didn't want to spend money to find out if her writing style had changed. With this series with Merry Gentry I'm still willing to give it a chance, though, compared to the Blake books. The reason I got into the Blake series was for the supernatural beings and the investigative turn to the stories. At the beginning of this series it was like that too. However, I'm finding that it seems to be taking a turn like the Blake series where it seems that it's more about how many people can get into the Merry's bed than about the story. If I wanted to read smut or soft porn I can just as easily pick up that kind of book. I'm not a prude, so mainly when I'm reading a story for "the articles" instead of the sex (as is the classic line about porn mags), I pick a book that I think is going to do that and when I'm in a smut mood I pick up that type of book. I like the possibilities of the Merry character and I want to know how she becomes Queen and all that, but I wish Hamilton's editor did a little more editing of the extraneous stuff so there's more meat. Past halfway into this book I was doing a lot of skimming because if I read one more time about how perfectly sculpted a guy was or how beautiful was his hair or how much infinite detail is spent on the exact shade of said hair or his eyes I was going to scream in annoyance. I like some of that and yes it sets the scene and all, but there's only so much that's needed before you need to tend more to the story. I was happy when Merry finally got to the Unseelie Court, but I wish she'd gotten to see her uncle before the end of this book. I do think that the whole world of the fey is greatly imaginative and creative and I like that Hamilton spends so much time researching the mythology. It does make it all seem more realistic. I do hope though that at least now and then Merry spends more time in the human world and goes into how humans deal with supernatural and immortal beings among them. That would be an interesting turn of events! |
