This story, which seems to be a non-fiction story, is actually a fictional account written by a man and I could almost believe in Sayuri as a real person who tells the story of her life as a geisha.
It begins in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha (dance and music, wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair, pouring sake to reveal just a touch of the wrist, competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it, etc) and as she’s confronted with such a world (where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder, where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men, and where love is scorned as illusion). And it is amazing to read as you learn the secrets of the life of a geisha and what is expected of her.
This book is certainly absorbing, and it held my attention in that lovely way that some books do (I especially enjoyed the scenes with the details about make up, hair ornaments, kimonos and the way of dressing them, instruments played, etc).
Thank you so very much for this book, APSC!

I enjoyed the book very much.
Thanks again conto for the effort to send it before my holidays.. the fact that I had time to read it slowly, imagining everything described and savouring each line of thought made me really feel the story with Sayuri's senses.. It's amazing how her voice seems so real..
It was also interesting to learn so many things about japanese culture, and particularly about the world of the Geisha..
Meantime I already contacted katialobato22 and I'm waiting for her answer..

Some books have this magic that can change your life, or, at least, your perspective of it. This is one of them. First of all because it is difficult for you to understand that it has been written by a western writer, and moreover, a man! Secondly, because you learn a lot about a total different culture from the one you've been raise in. And it teaches you, that how hard your life may seems, you should never forgive to fight for it, and it will turn out (with surprise) as you wish. I even cried in the last pages, which is rare in me.
