“Round-heeled” is an old-fashioned label for a woman who is promiscuous—someone who nowadays might be called “easy.” It’s a surprising way for a cultured English teacher with a passion for the novels of Anthony Trollope to describe herself, but then that’s just the first of many surprises to be found in this poignant, funny, utterly unique memoir. Jane Juska is a smart, energetic divorcée who decided she’d been celibate too long, and placed the following personal ad in her favorite newspaper, The New York Review of Books:

Before I turn 67—next March—I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me.

This closing reference was a nod to her favorite author, of course. The response was overwhelming, and Juska took a sabbatical from teaching to meet some of the men who had replied. And since her ad made it clear that she wasn’t expecting just hand-holding, her dates zipped from first base to home plate in record time.





Mit 66 veröffentlicht Jane Juska eine unmissverständliche Anzeige: "Bevor ich- nächsten März- 67 werde, möchte ich viel Sex mit einem Mann, der mir gefällt. Falls Sie vorher reden wollen, Anthony Trollope ist mein Lieblingsautor." Die Reaktion auf das Inserat ist überwältigend. In diesem Buch erzählt Juska von ihren Begegnungen- offen, witzig und sehr direkt, aber immer mit untrüglichem Gespür, wann man die Schlafzimmertür schließt und wie man sich und den anderen die Würde belässt. Ein gescheites Buch und ein Beweis dafür, dass die Sehnsucht nach Zärtlichkeit und Sex nicht nur ein Leben lang lebendig bleibt, sondern auch Erfüllung finden kann.
Jane Juska hat über 40 Jahre Englisch unterrichtet- an der High School, am College und im Gefängnis. Sie hat viele Beiträge in pädagogischen Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht. Dies ist ihr erstes Buch. Jane Juska ist geschieden, hat einen erwachsenen Sohn und lebt in Berkeley, Kalifornien.

Jane Juska hat auch einiges, und das sehr interessant, über ihr Leben als Kind, als Ehefrau und Mutter und als Lehrerin zu berichten und weil die Übersetzung vorgeblich sehr dilettantisch ist, hab ich's gleich im Original geholt und hab's nicht bereut, sprachlich kann man von Frau Juska einiges lernen (auch Dinge, die nicht im Pons stehen; -)

Vielen Dank, ich freue mich schon drauf. Ich lese erst noch ein anderes Buch zu Ende, und dann geht's an "A Round-Heeled Woman".

I really liked this book. Actually I read it on the weekend in 2 or 3 sittings. Interestingly the best scenes in the book were those about her teaching (esp. in prison), whereas the men Jane Juska is meeting following her ad don't seem as real, and often not very nice.

This was not really my cup of tea. This has nothing to do with the age group, but with the thought of placing a personal ad. Some of the men's responses really made me cringe.

Sorry, I finished it a while ago, but actually forgot it in my bookcase. I will send it an as soon as I get the next adress.

I enjoyed this book very much. It's not really "late-life adventures in sex and romance", more a whole biography. I like Jane Juska's language and found especially the passages about her teaching very interesting. And I got a a bit confused about the different men ... :-)

The book is traveling to maggisimmi.
